Obviously as the year progressed I wagered much more through the machines later in the year than earlier.

I have found over the years the most I seem to lose in one weekend (3-day trip) is $5k, which is more than I should be losing.
I always have trouble managing my money when i get into town, esp. on the first night.
ps, what are the paytables like in phoenix? ddb? tbd (if they have it)?

I have lost over $6000 on an overnight trip playing dollars. And that is on a positive game. High variance will get you sometimes. Of course that is not typical but it does happen. Total play was around 10 hours.

Most of the pay tables in Phoenix are poor. There are JOB with 6-5 and the machines are full. For DDB there are some 9-6 (98.98%) but they're higher denom ($5 and up) and single line. Mostly 9-5 and 8-5 for multi-line quarters and dollars, even some real crappy 7-5. I play a 10-cent, 10-play Supertimes machine that pays 9/5 (98.14%) and I usually do well and last a long time on this. As for as TDB, I don't play much because of the staggering variance, but from what I remember they are mostly 9/5 (97.02%) or lower. Deuces wild is scary here, most multiline games are Colorado Deuces (96.77% return/97.03% on STP). Some higher denom/single line (again $5 and up) have 97.58%, but those are boring to me and I have more fun playing my STP DDB 10cent, 10-play with the higher return.
What's is odd though, there are a few gems like the STP DDB 9/5 for dimes hidden on the same machines that have STP JOB 6/5 quarters and 8/5 DDB quarters. I'll have someone playing 5-play STP DDB 8/5 quarters at $7.50/deal right next to me while I'm playing 10-play STP DDB 9/5 dimes at $6.00/deal and they'll joke to their friend when I hit a RF for $400, "OH, he's only playing dimes, if he were playing quarters it would have been $1,000." I feel like retorting " "you stupid SOB, my game returns over 1% better than yours," but I keep my mouth closed, smile and keep playing and watch them go through their money at a rate $50/hr faster than me (that's if they even know how to play).

Speaking to how you said the machine you played paid better than the one next to you... when i was in vegas a few weeks ago, i was at the gold coast to play tbd (5 -play). the pay schedules were horrible (and the same 8/5 they were back in june). i went to EVERY machine in the casino that offered 5-play triple double bonus (at least 50 machines) b/c i have read sometimes there will be a few machines that pay better but not ONE of them offered better pay.

Occasionally, casinos offer better paytables on a few machines. But, not always and Coast casinos tend to be one that has consistent paytables. Unfortunately, there's no way to find out without looking.

very true, shadowman. and apparently, they aren't upping those paytables anytime soon. as i said, when i was there in june, they were also 8/5.

one would think the mega resorts would have more high payback machines like harrahs.i've played 9/6 job for hours before though and not won much.
