DDB strategy question
I was running the numbers on vpFREE2 for DDB in prep for my upcoming trip to vegas, and I cannot figure out why you would keep 2 pair over a pair of J-K when 2 pair pays 1-1. I'm sure it comes down to math, but why not try to go for a set over having just one card to draw for a FH? I understand keeping two Low pair, but if you had say....226KK why not just keep the KK? Again, I'm gonna bet it comes down to the math, but I just wanted to check! Thanks :)Jon

You are correct. The real answer is ... it depends on how much you get paid for a FH. But, since just about every DDB game available pays enough to make 2 pair the better choice, it's rarely mentioned.
In SDB where high pairs get a bigger bonus you don't hold two pair on anything but the full pay game (9-5). The answer also varies by paytable in DD aces and faces.
Keep in mind that one hits a FH 1 out of every 12 tries on average holding two pair and hits a quad holding a pair 1 out of every 360 tries.

Good numbers to know - but what about hitting a set from just holding a pair?
You hit a FH 1 out every 98 tries holding a pair.
This kind of information is easy to discover on your own if you have any of the software VP tutors. They usually have some kind of ability to analyze a single hand. The output shows a breakdown of the possible results of every hold. All you need to do is look at the results and divide the total number of possible results (16215 in this case) by the number of FHs (165). That's how I got 98. You can also see there were 45 possible quads. Dividing this into 16215 yields the number 360 I quoted before.
