Re: Going for the royal - and my new plan of attack?
I didnt read all the responses only the OP but my 2 cents would be...
Don't play $5 unless the quads pay 239 so you don't get a W2 for $1250 Quad hit which is right over the limit of $1200. I know a "high class" problem to have but still.
I'd stroll around and look for a large progressive machine($1's) one preferablly over $5,300 for a 2,3 or $4,700 for a 1,2.
Its been awhile since I been but I think the Luxor, Bellagio, Paris and New York New York have $1 DDB progressive.
But I can tell you now you can blow $500 on a $1 machine faster than a cat can lick his a$$. But if you really want to go for the knockout take $600 and go to the Bellagio or Cesars and play the $100 - 3 max and fire off two spins and walk away with a $240,000 Royal

spx, when you talk about progressives, what do you mean a 2,3 or a 1,2?

The way a progressive incremints. For the first $5 its adds .02 the next $5 it goes up .03 then and back and forth same for 1,2. So given a Royal hits around 40k hands a 2,3 progressive has cycled through around 40k hands when it reaches around $5,300 and a 1,2 around $4,700. Of course its all relative and random but at least you can see how many hands have been cycled since the last royal was hit. So if you see a machine around $7k plus you knows its been a while. Then again you have to count for those 1 credit players that can throw it all off.....
Of course I am talking $1 progressive that reset at $4k.

It's usually right there on the paytable explicitly stating the progressive ONLY plays at max coin.

I know you can not win without max bet but does not playing max bet still cause the progressive amount to go up, or is it pretty much just hogging a chair?

Playing less than max coins causes the progressive to increase, with no chance of winning the progressive RF. That's the point that CK was making.
