Targeted Advertising...

Post by roveer »

Not so much a VP story, but I've been noticing that all of my banner ads when surfing the net are gambling related.  Stranger yet, all of the spam in my email is for Viagra and hair loss treatments.  This targeted advertising thing is really spooky.  It's like they know who I am!

I am so glad someone finally brought this up..Not only was I getting tracked with the adds but I finally ended up with a re directing computer virus...I also got adds for Viagra and I'm a 68 yr. old woman......I know they were tracking me because there was an item I was looking for on a well known shopping site and I would keep getting adds for the exact item I was looking for from different sites...In this case a purse with a particular design..I also got a lot of adds for Casinos. It's like the site knew I went to Vegas to gamble...At any rate due to that I had an $85 repair bill and hours of work myself running all types of malwear and antivirus programs...I joined the site, Gold, and there are no adds but I haven't played any games yet...Just the forum...I definitely think there is a problem with the control of the adds....Started to address the Webman about the situation and wonder if others are getting spamed....VP has our name and email address so I'm very leery...If it happens again even thought I've joined I'll be through with the site...Hate to do that but those virus's are a pain and costly to repair....

We don't share your email with third parties. As for banner ads, ad companies target certain web sites so that they have a relevant target audience... it's based on this web site, not you personally. Videopoker.com obviously caters to a gambling-oriented audience so they are more likely to run ads here.Any spam email that you receive has nothing to do with us... the only emails we send out are related to this web site and our products (new contests, etc), you must opt-in to receive these emails, and we don't share your email address with anyone.

Please don't mis understand.  This post has nothing to do with VP.com.  I absolutly love this website and have found it both entertaining and informative.  My little story was to take a shot at the internet and it's insightful ability to see all of my shortcomings.  Literally.  I'm having one of those "somebody's watching me" kind of days...  Just funn'n.

I had been on this site for a long time and have never received any spam related to gambling.  Most spam or Ads I get are tied to Yahoo. Never do a search on their site or the spam man will appear. To counteract spam I do a regular check with Adaware and Spybot, they do a good job of eliminating tracking cookies.
