Do you want first place? I suggest you hold about anything that can get you a royal flush.

Do you know the tournament format? Fixed number of hands? Time limit?

Eduardo is right. You need to know the tournaments rules to figure out the best strategy. For example, I've played in two different tournament typess. One was a fixed number of hands (200) within a 15 minute time period. Easy to accomplish. There were about 300 participants and 3 rounds. This meant about 180K total hands. Therefore you could count on about 3-6 RFs. If you want to win you would need to get a RF. However, this tournament paid 50 spots so simply getting AWAK or several good quads might cash. So, you could go all out for the RF or all out for quads. It makes little sense to keep two pair until you have hit some big hands. The other tournament style I played was time based (10 minutes). It was a small number of entrants and thus speed of play was the biggest factor.

Welcome to forum, LILGTO. Log on videopokertournamentplay and read several entries including that of Bob Dancer. I have a love/hate relationship with tournaments. They are fun to look forward to and fun to play, akin to contests on this site! G L and let us know your impressions and how much you won!

Don't hold pairs.. hold only an A or anything near what a Royal Flush is or a part of a Royal... I played a couple and they were a complete waste of time...  make you sit around waiting for results...  If you dont get a Royal or Two..  don't bother waiting around... A 5 5 5 6, hold only A6 6 6 Ks Qs hold KQK K 7 7 2 only a KIMHO
