Beginner Advice
I am a PA resident who travels (trucker) to ALL states & gambles. The only w2g win was from CT and I had 25% federal tax w/held. Being self-employed I always pay in & also I split my winnings with a friend. I had win/loss statements to cover my win so I didn't concern myself with "logs" etc. My accountant did not show the win on my PA40, should I be asking him why not?
Any advice about keeping logs, taxes for winnings in other states etc, etc would be appreciated greatly! Obviously, I need to read some IRS periodicals but the state tax thing is confusing, especially lottery vs. gambling.

DK, looking through the CT-1040 NR/PY booklet, which is for CT non-residents, CT considers gambling winnings as income, so there is, in fact, a potential tax liability for CT on your winnings. You should look at this document to see if you HAVE to file a CT state tax return, as it would depend on the size of your winnings and other CT income. Since you had taxes withheld, you may be able to get some of that withholding back through filing a CT state return.

billyjoe,
thank you! I will read that. I asked if I had any state tax responsibility to CT when they took all my information to pay me & they said NO. I just took their word for it..figured Foxwoods=Indians, they would know! Jeez, I feel stupid! Now worried about 2 states!

Foxwoods= Indians What the HELL does that mean. The last time I checked no one is making any of you people go to tribal casinos. If you have a racial bias believe me we DO NOT NEED YOUR MONEY! Stay the hell away. My god the racial bias of some of the members on this site is unbelievable.

edog, lighten up. I believe he was referring to what is perceived as different tax issues at a Native American Casino. Similar to no tax on Cigs.

No need to fret, DK. Most states have an extension that you can file if you need more time. In the case of CT, you already had taxes withheld, so you will probably not owe anything additional to that state, unless you had other income there. For you and everyone on this site that travels and plays outside of their home state, it is always a good idea to look online for the Non-Resident Form Instructions for any state where you were lucky enough to collect a W2G. I would recommend that you read up on what qualifies as "income" in that state, since each state is different. Some states, like Illinois, do not tax casino winnings, where others, like Indiana, do. My experience is that the casino where you are playing will always take "the high road" when it comes to taxes and state withholding, erring on the side of withholding too much. Even if you produce an ID showing you are a non-resident, the casino really doesn't know your residency status as it relates to state taxes, nor does it really care.

OMG! Are u serious, racial bias?? Your barking up the wrong tree, I AM NOT & NEVER WILL BE RACIAL BIASED WHEN IT COMES TO NATIVE AMERICANS! In my opinion, they are the only true Americans in this country!
As for my comment, YES I meant regarding special taxes(or tax exempt) in relation to Indian casinos. I primarily go to Indian casinos over any other #1 because they usually have bingo #2 because I like their environment over big corporations casinos! Actually, I go hundreds of miles out of way to go to them!
And one more thing, you might want to look in the mirror "you people" is definately racial bias!
Thanks to everyone for answering my ?, I think it will be the last one I ask on this site & I can foresee cancelling my membership!

I am dead serious. If you went to a casino owned by asians would you have said asian casino= CHin* casino no you would not have. This special taxes thing has me confused gambling winnings from a tribal casino has the same tax implications as any other non- tribal casino. At least here in wisconsin it does. Also Faygo we pay taxes on cigs here also. We pay taxes just like everyone else does. plus a lot of money to the state in the gaming compacts.

The Indians are not in the business of helping people who play in their casinos, just as much as edog isnt in the business of helping other posters here who have questions, and instead looks for the tinyest opening to claim regular people with regular questions and those who try to help are going all Custer on him. Next watch for him to threaten to sneak up behind you when youre not looking like the strange guy did to me. Little does he know my wheelchair is armed with rear heat-seeking 9mms and not muskets. This is 2012 not 1812. Smarten up edog.
