Longest Dry Spell?

Post by FloridaPhil »

I'm doing much better his year, but last year was terrible.  For you guys that play a lot and keep good records, I'm curious to know the greatest number of hands you have ever played between Royals?

Phil, you post good questions and experiences, your clear concise posts are interesting and relevant. My longest dry spell was my first DRY spell, or I should say my first SPELL of any kind.   I started playing VP for real in the mid 1990s (I'm going to guess and say around 1996 is when I really truly began playing VP with any seriousness and regularity.)  I went YEARS before I actually hit a royal, I think it was around 5 years or so, but of course, back then I did drink a lot when I gambled so it is slightly possible, but not likely I may have hit One royal and didnt remember, but i doubt that very much.   But I really truly went YEARS before my first royal ever.   Really hard to understand and believe why this happened, but it truly did.   A good guess as to how many actual hands of JOB (that was all played back then during those first five or 6 years of VP) I played during this 5 year drought would be around 1.6 million hands....those first 5 years or so were all spent in vegas, I averaged around 400 hands per hour then and I know I played around 4000 total hours of VP over those first 5 years, not terribly prolific but solid enough.   So as you can see, when I finally did hit my first royal, I was wayyyyyyyy overdue.  Since then, I have gone as many as 500,000-600,000 hands between royals, but then I have had periods of "HOTT" play as you describe, such as this past year where i think i have actually hit something like 12 or 13 Royals all over Atlantic City since July of last year (2011).... But dry spells like my first one are one reason why, even though I know and admit is isnt LIKELY, I do believe it is POSSIBLE some VP machines are set up to deal absolute garbage/crap/nada/zero value to players like us.

75k hands since my last RF.  Just finished 8k hands of DDB in A/C and only had 4 quads entire session.  Knitting may be a little bit more exciting !

Interesting.  My wife plays about 30,000 hands a year.  She's only had one Royal since she began playing video poker 5 years ago.  She's a numbers person and plays very slow and deliberate.  Her loses are low, but she gets discouraged some times. My first Royal came about 8 years ago at the MGM Grand in Vegas.  I went 4 more years without one, then hit 4 in one weekend.    I used to play DDB and Deuces, but the swings kept busting me.   I've since switched to Jacks and Bonus and my number of hands played has increased substantially.  I think this is also due to the fact that I can play these games faster, since the Jacks strategy seems easier to me.  More hands equals more Royals. (Seems obvious now, but it took a while to sink through my thick skull).

Wife just had one this morning @ Beau Rivage in Biloxi. Sorry to dash any conspiracy theories out there, but she seems to get several every gaming trip.

Congratulations!  I guess the "WIN" switch must have been turned on?  We love the Beau Rivage.  It's my wife's favorite place. We are on our way to Cherokee on Sunday hoping for the same result!

I can't imagine going that long without a royal..Very sad..I hit one at the Argosy in KC a few weeks ago and my friend hit one at the new Hollywood...I usually get at least one each trip. When I started playing in the early 90's I only got to play about 4 times a year..Played mostly at Palace Station on twice yearly trips to Vegas and then some in KC..I lost count at 24 royals..I do on occasion throw the approved play and go for the long shot..It's paid off a few times...

I'm glad you said that.  I play quarter Jacks and Bonus almost exclusively and my session budget is large enough to weather most big swings.  I'm seriously thinking about keeping 3-to-Royals over paying pairs.  It might cost me $30.00 once in a while, but an extra Royal may be worth it to me.  I don't think I'll take A-10s because it might cost $100 for 4 Aces.   My wife got her first Royal last fall and I'm hoping her luck improves.

Phil,
I can't tell you the number of hands but I went 8 months -over 20+ trips) from Dec.07-Aug. 08 between Royals . Luckily Sweet C was hitting 10 over that same time period.

Since we began playing we've had 4 trips were both of us hit a RF; Candy had 2 trips catching 2 RF; one night where I caught 2; and we've had one night we caught three.

My best span was 6 royal hits (2 were dealt Royals; one dealt was on 5 hands and the other dealt on 25 hands.) in 24 days in 2011.

Great question. I'm enjoying the responses.
