As a recreational player living outside of Vegas, the only opportunity I have to get ahead of the odds is move up in denomination when the opportunity arises.   You NEVER have the opportunity to get ahead of the odds. Assuming the same pay schedule, the odds don't change. You cannot predict the future hands by looking at the past half hour or so. If you're looking for "opportunities arising," then every day $25 machines will give you plenty of opportunity. What you seem to be doing is guessing when a particular denomination will return more than typical. Sometimes you'll guess right. Sometimes you'll guess wrong. Pretending there's a science to this guessing is just fooling yourself. The net effect of the guessing is zero. Your percentage return when you change denominations will be the same as if you stayed at the same denomination --- over many hundreds of thousands of times. Bob

I agree with your math and I've played long enough to know that past results don't predict anything.  Never-the-less, if I have my session bankroll locked up so I know I'm going home even and I walk into the high limit slots, play $25 a hand and hit a DDB quad (done it many times) the odds of the game don't change but my wallet thickness does.   There's nothing wrong with moving up in denomination when you're ahead and you know you’re not going to lose money that day.  My first goal in every session is to go home even, after that I'm free to do whatever I want.   I'm not saying I'm a long term winner, but I'm sure I do better than someone banging away at 7/5 DDB all day.  Professional players play 100%+ odds exclusively and I totally understand how that works.  These odds are not available to the average player outside of Vegas.  With the odds stacked against you that much, you must take a shot when you can or the casino will beat you down forever.   The trick is to have the discipline to manage your money so you don't chase your loses and are strong enough to walk out of the casino a winner.  I'm sure Bob will say this is all a bunch of baloney, but it works for me.

Hear-Hear, Phil .
BTY, I have seen Bob post the concept of "Money Management" as 'ridiculous', 'foolish' and 'totally nonsense', but I have never yet seen a BD post mention a deli item. But, afterall, it IS a new year, so anything is possible..

Professional players play 100%+ odds exclusively and I totally understand how that works.  These odds are not available to the average player outside of Vegas.  Quite possibly you don't totally understand how that works. There are advantage video poker opportunities all across the country. Perhaps not to the 'average player,' but pros exist in many (but certainly not all) jurisdictions other than Las Vegas.Finding these positive opportunities is part of the game --- even in Vegas. Often the players who find them don't spread the word. But they are definitely there. If and when you commit to never playing a game that returns less than 100% (including the game itself --- discounted by your skill level ---, the slot club, the promotions, the drawings, the mailers, salable comps, etc.), you will find that a lot more opportunities exist than someone who takes the attitude that "if it's not Vegas, there are not good games."
