I agree with the randomness, but also with the incidental reasons regarding playability, concentration, atmosphere. The most important thing if games and pay tables are the same is your own happiness and sanity. Even if there was no rational reason to want to get up and switch machines, go ahead and try if it puts you at ease. The time away from the machine on a negative expectation game won't hurt you.

Untrue. Most casinos today have "senseometers" built into almost every machine. Smiling or at least feeling good triggers the senseometer and produces better results. This is one of the methods, in fact, that most LV casinos are now using to gently steer the "old crabs" away, on the theory that a happy crowd is a profitable crowd. This flies into the face of my theory the slot director walks the floor and wherever he sees too much happiness, he knows he can tweak those machines for extra profits. He reasons to himself, they can afford to be a little less happy and certainly don't need it, so I'm going to take it.

You must be playing a casino that has the new software that allows the SD to change the returns through use of an ipad or smartphone. Our favorite casino is older and just got the AC controls connected so the crew can just walk around with their iPad and control the temperature. However; they also installed the new WMS software. Our Slot Directors and pay attendants always come by to say hi! because they know I'm (playing) paying their salary.

However; they also installed the new WMS software.

How craptastic are the paytables on those units?

The only place I have seen them decent is Joliet: 9/6 DDB for dollars w/$5000 Royal and 55 for 1 Straight Flush (99.57%)

The new WMS software is a management tool only for tracking play, comp points, operations. Pay tables stayed the same (98-99% depending on denomination. Corporate encouraged the Lake Charles Isle to move to the WMS system. Have been told the move was a massive mistake: Few examples:
* Software not compatible with older machine chips especially VP machines. Having to do work-arounds/upgrade chips increasing costs.
* New software doesn't alert tech/pay attendants of issues with machines. Jackpots no longer show up for P/A to respond to so patrons are often waiting.
*Jammed machines etc. aren't always automatically detected anymore.

Sounds like the bureaucracy I worked with, district administration often made decisions without campus input or ignored campus input (great salesperson) and then griped when the teachers/principals/campuses couldn't make it work. Thats why I try to talk to the "on-the-ground" people who can are having to resolve the issues.

Bigger issues are corporate policy issues like 5X points for platinum level slot players but only 2.5X for platinum VP players.

Oh management system. Considering how their video poker games are, I'm not surprised it's programmed like garbage too. The VP units take forever to load.

Those "My Poker" games at Red Rock do take a while to load a game.  It takes longer to scan the crappy pay schedules before deciding not to play them at all.
