Do you talk to other players?

Post by FloridaPhil »

In most circumstances, I don't start conversations with other video poker players.  You never know if you're going to get a Chatty Kathy or someone that wants advice on every hand.   However, every once in while I have a conversation where I receive a tip on a good game or another casino.  You can usually tell if someone is a veteran player because they know how to talk without interrupting your play.  It's usually a classy woman in her fifties of sixties with nice clothes and jewelry.   They spend a lot of time in the casino and usually have something interesting to say.   Some time ago, a lady next to me hit a Royal.  She quietly drew the next hand and cash out the ticket.  I noticed her hand and congratulated her.  She told me not to tell anyone and went on playing.  In a few minutes her husband came along and said he was out of money and wanted to know if she had done any good.  She said no and he walked away.  I turned to her and we both smiled.  Very cool...

It was a VP player next to me who told me about this site, and the rest is history. I pass this tip along when it seems appropriate. Recently, a gal had me save her seat while she redeemed a jackpot. When she returned, she confessed that her husband would want it if he knew about it and she had already given him $200. I could relate. Different player, different state, from Florida Phil!Others have clued me in on useful tips as hitting the draw key to tally up the amount fassster and make the machine quiet. and changing the dollar amount to amount of coins in play with a finger swipe. For receiving useful info, I am grateful, but hesitate to initiate conversation. Usually, I am on a limited gaming time schedule and prefer to focus on my game. Once, it became a looong counseling session as the gal knew her present, long time beau was totally wrong for her and I had to agree. She really reached out for HELP and needed an opinion of an unbiased stranger. Not interested in going there again, any time soon!Once, we had just landed at Vegas when a stranger mentioned they had just snagged tickets for BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS that night at MGM. That sounded like a great idea so we did too and really enjoyed the event!

Hitting the draw button usually stops the bells and whistles. One time when I was in a small Wisconsin casino east of Minneapolis I hit a quad for $500. The stupid machine locked up for a hand pay.  I sat there for 20 minutes waiting to get paid with the bells going off the whole time.  I guess they wanted everyone to know someone had won something...  I enjoy talking to knowledgeable lady players.  Thank God they never ask me for any personal advice.

I tend to talk if it looks like they won't mind. It breaks the isolation and monotony for me. I don't like that all the time while playing.

The people who want to talk while I play VP are usually drunks. Maybe it's just me.

Years ago, at the Riviera in Black Hawk Co, I was playing next to a guy who was dealt a royal flush on a 25 cent 3 line machine. After I said "Wow! Nice Hit!", he turned to me and said "Why don't you mind your own business." I was so shocked I replied back "Gee, nice attitude for someone who just won $3k." Now, I usually speak only when spoken to.

Fortunately, most players aren't like that. That guy sounds like a prick likely with a gambling problem to boot because it takes some screwed up mind to have a bitter attitude after a hit like that.

kfed: 'Nothing normal or nice about his attitude! Perhaps he was under stress and/or recovering big loses. I prefer others not notice when I hit a great hand. It's way beyond uncomfortable/scary having someone beg for a hand out or being followed, as has happened a few times. IMHO, those walking by, especially casino personnel, should not comment, as that draws even more attention to my win.

I rarely talk to vp players as I dont want to be talked TO! However when I play slots I do talk-you dont have to concentrate when youre just hitting the repeat bet button. But I hate when someone talks to me during a bonus round grrrrr
