Kansas Casinos Vote

Post by MikeA »

As many of you know, the State of Kansas has approved several Casinos in Kansas to be under the jurisdiction of the Kansas State lottery.  Now, My understanding is that this does not mean that the Slots and VP will be driven by the Lottery engine such as is the case in New York.  But I could definitely be wrong. The vote ended last night (Jul 7) in Segwick County.  Segwick is the county in which Wichita is located.  There was a heated advertising campaign with a lot of just incorrect speculation on the part of those supporting the "NO" side of the question.   Same ole Same ole.  Mafia coming in.  Corruption.  Casino bosses taking all the money and county getting none.  Morale degradation.  The "YES" side of the question was more truthful without having to decend to lies  or speculation.Still, the vote failed.  The "NO" voters won by a very slight margin.  The sad thing is that there were two questions on the ballot.  One to allow extended gambling (i.e. a casino) in the county and the second one to allow slot machines at the local race track (greyhounds).  Both failed to pass.  The dog track will now close because they have lost on the average several million bucks for the past several years.  250 people will lose jobs because of this failure to allow the track to be revitalized by the slots.Besides being somewhat embarrassed by the influence the Churches have over the voting public, I am sort of glad that the Extended Gambling failed in Wichita.  The only impact is that the casino will likely be built 30 miles south of Wichita in Wellington which is in Sumner County.  They have already approved by ballot the idea of having a casino in their County.  I can envision what would have happened in Wichita should it have passed.  There would have been hundreds of people picketing the casino entrance.  They are tenacious!  They did this protesting at Abortion Clinics for years and years.  I can do without that crap.  Let the citizens of Segwick lament the boost to the economy as the watch Sumner County reap the benefits!  Believe me, the agricultural County of Sumner is in more need of the boost in economy than is Segwick.  Too many people wanting to "take a stand" in Segwick.  They've always been that way.  Maybe they can dig a little deeper into their pockets during the offerings in Church to support those losing their jobs at the Greyhound Track!  IDIOTS!

I have to be careful here. Mike, it is the old thing about who's OX is being gored. Maybe it's time "they" were taxed on their earnings since "they" want to run the governments.

I really didn't want to turn this into an anti-religion thread.  But in the past, I have been a part of congregations that get their rocks off organizing protest movements.  It gives them something to use as an excuse to "circle the wagons!"   Oh, no doubt, some of them are truly convicted morally to participate.  But many of them are just doing what they are told.Like I initially stated though, I'm more relieved that the ballot didn't pass the extended gaming in Wichita (okay, Segwick County) than I would have been had it passed.  There will be a LOT less hassle from the conservative right with the casino going in down in the County to the South of Segwick.  It's really a better location.  Closer to Oklahoma so if they set the casinos up correctly in Kansas (no Class II crap) then it will most definitely draw a big bite out of the frequenters of the Oklahoma casinos in the northern part of the State.  And, it is only 30 miles from Wichita where there will be more options for dining, etc.  Yep, Segwick County LOST this opportunity and have no one to blame other than the congregations of churches dead set against the issue!

You are both going to burn in purgatory, you deviant gamblers. Seriously though, the vast majority of greyhound/horse tracks are class 2's. No loss for the community as a whole, if they essentially voted against a class 2 establishment because the general populace would  probably lose a hell of a lot more than the displaced employees.

You could be correct Bigboy, but now, we'll never know.  I am a little paranoid that the casinos will come under the Kansas Lottery, but am hopeful that is only because that is the only State Agency that they could organize a commission under currently.  I sure hope that they set up the regs so that the casinos will have machines "Nevada Fair".
