At all Harrahs/Caesars properties across the country all slot/video poker hits of $1000 or higher lock up the machine for a hand pay. However, you still only receive a W2g for jackpots of $1200 or more.
  Damule thats not accurate, I routinely hit $1,000.00 payouts (AWAK, multiple 2,3,4'sWK, 5OAK) at Harrahs Joliet and the machines do not lock up.

 Harrah's is notorius for forcing a handpay on 1,000 hits.  It was something we all complained about as it takes away from gameplay.  At some point this year they were resetting machines so they no longer required handpays but there are still a bunch of machines that do.  Unfortunatly, the two that I play the most still do. Roveer

And to add to tedlark's point, it's more of an Harrah's AC thing I guess. My ex hit a $1000 Royal at Harrah's St. Louis and it didn't lock up either.

  Not to beat a dead horse here but I have hit many $1,000.00 royals/AWAK at Rio & Harrahs in Las Vegas and the machines did not lock up either.

OK - how about this. There used to be a row of multi-line machines @ Mirage LV near the bar where $1000 payouts would require a "pouch-pay" (ie - lock up). But if you played the bank of machines near the buffet, that same payout just adds to your credits, unless it is $1200 or greater. Same casino. 
 
I was told that it was a setting on those machines.

Older machines that came online back when "coin in" was literal (i.e. people could still plunk coins into slits to play) pretty much have that automatic setting for handpay for hits over X amount.   If anyone can recall, there was a gradual shift during the mid 1990s from Coin only to both Coin AND dollar bill accepted...but when cash out time came along, if you had more than 1000 credits in the machine you had to wait for one of the many change girls to cash you out!    This persisted until the TITO evolution came online and resulted in all those nice old ladies who used to walk around with pouches of money being forced into early retirement.    But of course, the transformation throughout the industry back then was not UNIFORM and quick......it was actually many years as casinos phased in the new and phased out the old machines, and wherever possible they simply upgraded a machine instead of replace outright.   As such, some machines that came online in the VERY last days of COINS, when machines still had to accomodate the possibility of being called upon to accept coins even though TITO was proliferating, were made to require a handpay on all big hits. In vegas you can still find a few machines that accept coins for nostalgic players (mostly downtown) but you can still find LOTS of machines that are TITO but still have the old coin in slots (plugged up of course) and inside you can see the old coin hoppers still in place, just empty now.   But on the strip its almost all NEW state of the art glitzy galore now.

  Back in the good old coin in/coin out days I would be playing 3/5 play DDB and I would usually have a couple full buckets of quartes sitting next to my machine. My dearly departed brother in law would usually come around after a couple hours asking if he could bum a few bucks off me and I knew that one bucket usually equated to about $250.00 so I would simply tell him to take a bucket. You could tell at the end of a session how well I did by the number of buckets I was lugging to the cashiers cage. Ah, memories...

What I can tell you all is this. I play at Harrah's AC and it used to be all machines locked up at 1k. Then they changed it and some don't so its a mixed environment. It think it's more about the fact that they did not do a good job of implementing the new rule of allowing 1000 wins without handpays. They just skipped a bunch of machines. In Vegas I usually don't get a lock up. Also in vegas I usually get pouch pay. of course they are probably too afraid to let the attendants wander around in NJ with lots of money for many reasons.

Don't try and read into this. I think the variation is just sloppy management nothing else. Even the attendants get frustrated when they have to pay on 1k. That's all it is.

Ah memories! You are so right Ted. Mine was having to have the change lady come over with her cart at Casino Windsor to carry all the buckets to the cage. As Archie would say, ""Those were the days."
