I submit that you would have more success playing a higher volitility game, like TDB, rather than adjusting a JOB strategy to chase a progressive RF.

If he is looking to increase volitility, yeah, I agree. Or even DDB. JoB and TDB are complete polar opposites.

...If presented with, say, AhJhThJd3h would the 3h flush penalty make holding the paying pair the right play?I don't normally chase progressives, but I was recently faced with a 25c 8/5 Bonus game with a $1600 royal, plus progressives on SF and 5-K (the D).  Got me thinking.

Thinking is good. Casinos and game manufacturers don't want us to think much beyond the bells, whistles and flashing lights.

In the specific situation you give, holding AJTh is better than the high pair when the RF pays more than 5725, or 1145 per coin-in.

However, for every 1 per coin-in the 5-K progressive is over 25, the RF payoff needs to be 3 more per coin-in to make the RF try better. For example, if the 5-K progressive is at 175 (35 per coin-in) the RF needs to be worth at least 5875 (1175 per coin-in).

billyjoe has a point, but only if we're talking about full-pay TDB and 8/5 BP with a progressive that resets. To get the full advantage of the progressive RF you have to hit it at least once; otherwise FP TDB has a slight expected value advantage, .996 versus .991 for BP (no progressive). Of course if you only play when the RF progressive gives BP a better expectation than .996 you'll do better with BP.

But as a wise man once said, you can't profitably trade expected value for volatility.

Did that wise man ever get quads? I will take Aces with a kicker in TDB over EV any day.

I don't know; you could ask him.

What EV tells you is how much you're going to have to invest in order to hit those Aces with kickers or Royals. Lower EV means the big hands, which you will get in any game provided you play enough, are going to cost you more.
But it's a free country, so play the games you like.

That is why win/loss limits are beneficial when you play.

100 percent agree with that, whether you're playing $5 TDB or penny-ante Go Fish.
