Re: The death of XP
I have an 11 year old Dell Inspiron that I am quite happy with. I am not a computer geek by any means and just get by with computers. That is all. I have had this one repaired several times so the insides have all been virtually replaced. I know that support for xp is ending. I really like xp as do many. If I have the latest anti virus programs like Mcafee, Malwarebytes, etc., would I still be vulnerable to hacks when the support ends. If so, rather than do anything with this notebook, I think I will just use my points and get one from the casino. I would really rather keep this one, but I am not sure which is the best way to go.

I am kinda in the same boat with my Thinkpad. I increased memory to the max, and have plenty of disk space, so it runs great. I have Windows 7 on my other PC, an HP Mini, and I like that, which is why I am migrated the Thinkpad to Win7.
If I buy a new PC, it will probably have Windows 8, and I have heard not so great things about that.

Think Pad...that brings back memories...about 20 years ago, in the infancy of computers, they gave us one at work. It was indestructable and had an old system called Unix. I think it was pre windows. Never failed, but some years later they junked them for new notebook computers based on windows. Froze, locked up, etc. constantly. I eventually gave up on the new junk and retired 10 years ago. They also made double the paperwork of pre computer days. Miss the 50's and early 60's big time.

On CNBC I heard that HP is offering, or soon will be offering Windows 7 as an option to Windows 8 on the computers they sell.

Interesting. They did something similar when Vista came out, offering XP as an alternative. Vista soon bit the dust.
