I used to get some decent hand pays at my local places in Henderson..The Station Casinos. I have been on a dry run for a while. I have actually stopped all together. Not winning gets old.

stabbed myself with the knitting needle, tripped over the latch hook rug, caught some butterfiles, but had to release them so they could pollinate the plants on the deck, and square dancing.....uh...not for me...The other hobbies while fun for awhile, just seem to collect dust over time. So that leaves video poker and beautiful women ( woman in my case). Wife are you are you listening...
   Knit one pearl two and swing your partner round n round; olds you are a true Rennaisance man. Plus you can probably rebuild a big block with your eyes closed while painting a fender at the same time.

It's the same way in Southern California. I'm staying away from the casinos. I'm tired of the whole gambling scene. Sitting down at filthy, dirty cigarette ash covered machines, people walking around like zombies, music so loud you have to wear ear plugs, rude people that use machines as dinner tables with 5 cents showing on the credit meter while they stuff their faces with pizza. And yes, not winning makes it all that much worse.
I have a cousin that is a professional VP player. That's all he's done for a living for almost 20 years. While he's done very well for himself, even he has told me that VP is not what it used to be. He's also backing off quite a bit.

  One day he may very well be proved right but his delivery of the message doesn't work well to convert non-believers.

  I maintain my message that goes like this: "if a player thinks that there is something wrong with a game, or a machine, don't play it." Take up another game, one that you think you have a better chance of winning. Or invest the time into a new hobby; knitting, latch hook rugs, collecting butterflies or square dancing.  
I've probably mentioned this before but wouldn't a person have to spend the time and money playing before they develope an opinion. I've heard it said more than once a year or two playing vp proves nothing so how long would someone need to play before it becomes obvious to them they should quit trying. I've been playing for years, Seven Star player and I'm not sure if we're still playing the same game we all came to know and love.

I came to a similar conclusion some time ago.  While I was always a small time gambler, I just got tired of losing money.  I would lose $250-$500 a week for weeks at a time, then hit a Royal for $1,000 which would make me happy until the next week's loss.  It didn't seem to matter how much I won, the casino always got it back.  I'm convinced the only way to play video poker is to place tiny bets (for me that's one quarter at a time).  To keep it exciting, I bet dollars with anything I win over my bankroll for the day.  Since I've been doing this, I'm doing much better financially and personally.  I realize most people can't get excited about gambling unless there's real money involved.  I'm having the same amount of fun, without the depression of losing my ass most of the time.  I also get a mental kick out of sticking it to the casino by playing all day for peanuts.  I'm sure that doesn't concern them much as I've already paid for a bunch of video poker machines by now.

I am a recreational player and to me, the action is the juice. If I am losing my shorts at a certain level of play I will drop down a denomination to stem the tide. I like the big hits but I don't enjoy taking the big hits going after the big game. Trophies are nice but in the end walking out a few bucks ahead before greed or stupidity sets in, is nicer. A few players here have also realized this and adapted their play accordingly.

If the day comes when I get totally fed up with video poker because I believe that the game no longer has the same return as it once did then I will stop playing it. I have no problem playing table games or slots but I prefer video poker. I have been playing video poker as my main gambling outlet since 1995 so I have seen the rollout of multiline games and all of the gimmick games too.

I try to keep my casino visits down to once or twice a month, locally, but I prefer Las Vegas overall. I still think I am getting a fair deal when playing video poker. I've never won the lottery either but I don't scream and hollar claiming it to be rigged just because my numbers weren't drawn.

I think most video poker players eventually adjust their play to match their likes and dislikes. To me, video poker is not about money at all.  It's just another video game and I like the challenge of trying to beat the machine.  I also like most of the casino atmosphere.  I could do without smokers, rude people and drunk players, but that's the price you pay to play the game.  I can't think of anything I would rather do at 5:30 in the morning than sit in front of a video poker machine with great music and the whole casino to myself.

A wiser woman than me once said it's nice to quit winners but it's righteous to quit when you planned to.
