Sonoma Quake
I guess by now most folks have heard about the 6.0 quake. News reports still coming in. Largest in 25 years or so. Spoke to my sister who lives in Sonoma. They are OK, but lots of broken dishes etc. and her best friend's house in NAPA has leaking or broken water pipes everywhere. They are OK too thank GOD. Hope all of the vp.com folks out that way made out OK. Have to watch for after shocks now that still could be in the 5-6 range.

Best of luck to all those affected. Nature still rules.

Lived in So. Calif. from 1957 to 2001, so earthquakes were commonplace. Some where real doozies, like the Northridge quake and the Landers quake in 1993.It had a magnitude of 7.3 but because that fault line went out into the desert, damage and injuries were limited, thank goodness. It also hit at 4 a.m. My husband was out of bed like a shot because it was a "rolling quake" and our glass bookcases in the living room were in dire jeopardy. There he was, standing in his underwear, holding back 3 glass bookcases, weighing about 200 lbs apiece. We had a line of fullgrown pine trees lining our driveway and they were swaying like we were in a hurricane. In So. Calif. power lines are all underground and we never lost power. We even felt the horrible quake in San Francisco back in the '80s. They happen without warning and by the time you react, they are usually over. Thank goodness, there were no fatalities with this one.

Well, at least your hubby wears something to bed. I would be in trouble.
I was in one, small quake in California while there on business years ago. I was sitting in a meeting room when I felt sick to my stomach. The locals yelled "Earthquake ", and headed for the exit. I sat there, like a dummy, and said "Hey - cool". Nothing clunked me on the head, fortunately.

I lived in Southern California from Arpil 1992 through 2006.....right after I graduated and first started working in Los Angeles (and right after the LA riots) was the LAnders quake (also called the Joshua Tree quake).....i was sitting in my chair and I literally started to ROLL back and forth , almost as if the hand of god where propelling me to and fro.....needless to say I was scared crapless. Then, in 1994 the Northridge quake struck.....I happen to be living down near Disneyland at the time so I was not near the epicenter up in the San Fernando Valley, but it still shook the hell out of us. I was sleeping in my underwear, and it was 4:31 am (I had my alarm set for 4:45am so I was just starting to awake as I did every morning.......all of a sudden the house began MOVING to and fro, back and forth, up and down......I thought I was dreaming until I saw the clock radio moving as well......instantly I knew then what was going on and rolled out of my bed onto the floor and began groping in the dark for a pair of pants. Its funny how we all react in such situations.....you are supposed to IMMEDIATELY exit the building and save your life, but the idea of running into the streets almost naked is more terrifying than actual death....at least it was for me.Later on, I also spent time living in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in Sacramento, before finally returning home to New England in 2007....I am well familiar with the region that was hit last week and several friends and family have all reported in safe and sound, but with a lot of broken stuff. All the cliches that people love to throw about after such an event only make it worse....sure, we all are srill at the mercy of the earth and the forces of nature, and our continued abuse of the earth, its resources and our unwillingness to change all factors into this.COGNITIVE DISSONANCE: It plays a role in why we keep going to casinos despite the results we receive, and likewise it figures in how and where we live out our lives.....ALL THOSE PEOPLE who inhabit California along all those fault lines simply stick their heads in the sand with respect to the inevitability of the "BIG ONE" finally happening. I am not saying this was the MAIN reason I got the hell out of there and came back home, but it was definitely on the list......

You are correct. Sorry..just curious why you needed to correct me? I was there and husband was in his underwear and I do know it was a 7.3....anything else you would like to point out?

I know this is straying from the subject a little, but I was wondering if DB or anyone has been to the Basque Boulangerie Cafe in Sonoma or had dinner at the Swiss Hotel also in Sonoma. I haven't been back there ink 15 years, but I will never forget both which were excellent especially the coffee and pastry at the cafe and big Prawns at the Swiss Hotel. I hope both survived the quake without damage. Just thinking about them makes me want to fly out there tomorrow. I just don't like to fly for some reason, though I would go up in a WW1 biplane or blimp in an instant. Remember I am from Bizarro World....I guess that is why I am such a fan of MC Escher's work.

Please don't talk about food right now; I'm still trying to keep from regurgitating my dinner after DaBurglar mentioned that he slept in his underwear. He simply couldn't say: "I was asleep and was awakened by an earth tremble.?"

He simply couldn't say: "I was asleep and was awakened by an earth tremble.?"Oh yeah, yessirree.....you got me ted. My WHOLE INTENTION in making my post was indeed to make you PUKE all over yourself. Damn if I didnt come close this time....next time I will have to amp up the disgust factor for you.You really are not very nice, or smart......This is (was) actually a serious, rather GRAVE topic for a thread, since thousands of people had their lives potentially Threatened, many were injured and untold thousands LOST money and property in this natural disaster. Those of us who have actually experienced such phenomena felt behooved to share our experiences because an earthquake is such a traumatic event. Some of us (like me) try to temper and dilute our posts with a little down to earth perspective and humor on just how exactly human beings behave during such terrifying and catastrophic events. And yet here you are, tedlark, hell bent once again on getting one more POTSHOT against Daburglar....that's all you care about.....Its also funny how Billyjoe's allusion to sleeping in the nude did not elicit any feelings (or comments) at all from you, but my underwear did.....hmmmmmmmmmm....?
