What have you had confiscated at airport security?

Post by marie meijer »

On different trips, I have had a large, new, hard to find toothpaste taken. Also, tiny embroidery scissors. AND a tiny Swiss army knife that was forgotten and hiding in my cosmetic bag but showed up really well at security.Oops! I do understand TSA regulations are for our own safety.

In starting this topic, I was hoping to help you avoid the TSA hassels I have experienced at airports. I also hoped to learn more about what was not acceptable on planes. Last week, my new, unopened, 14 oz peanut butter jar was almost confiscated at Detroit Metro. The fact that it was new and unopened was not the issue but that it was over the acceptable 3.4 oz allowed on the plane. It should have been in checked luggage. I had no checked luggage and I wanted to consume some on the plane instead of purchasing their food for a four plus hour flight. I had a rougher time with what little was left of that peanut butter at Vegas, McCarran. I explained to the TSA individual and he consulted his supervisor. She denied my peanut butter. I asked to speak to his supervisor and explained why I needed it on the plane. She insisted it was on her banned list and size did not matter. She finally agreed with me. The TSA individual said I was lucky as no other supervisor would have allowed me to fly with that jar. He asked me to open the peanut butter, used a small white strip and something else to test the contents. Today, on the net, I found a list of 17 items that need to be in checked luggage, shipped ahead or left at home. Peanut butter IS listed under creamy stuff.

Too funny, E.D in L had an over-size jar of hair conditioner. The TSA agent recognized the brand as expensive and allowed her to keep it after testing it. Apparently nothing written in stone for TSA agents.

Wife and I once took two aunts to Vegas as a 'thank-you' for something. After going through security, noticed they were both gone...pulled out of line for a secondary check. Turns out their smart little Italian comments about the TSA got them in trouble.

Wife and I tried to make a break for it, but TSA returned them to us anyway.

cute story, Kib! Husband's childhood friend got them into trouble in looong wait at the Canadian border when he exited the car to smoke a cigar. STAY IN THE CAR! May he RIP.

Oh...and when crossing the border to Canada...not only stay in the car, but be sure to check under the seat for 'dummy' hand grenades. I recall someone doing that once..;)

Thanks a lot MM..."I can explain...". Now I have to explain why the Feds are calling my wife to ask about the lady your husband knows who had the hand-grenade at the Canadian border...geez.
