To Shave or Not to Shave...

Post by Galeygoo »

Is it me?    What is with all these baseball players and their new looks/locks, beards, etc.  Reminds me of the Smith Bros.   Maybe some peole like it, but I certainly think they look horrible.  George Steinbrenner must be turning in his grave, for many reasons.  lol

They are called playoff beards. They also do it in hockey.

Thanks, Edog.  Goes to show you how often my White Sox have been in the playoffs lately.  And shame on me, I forgot how cute those Black Hawks looked a couple years ago.

King George was known, especially in his younger more intense tyrannical days (late 1970s  into the 1980s) to fine players who refused to abide by the Yankees grooming standards. The Late Thurman Munson, former catcher and captain of the great yankee teams of the 1970s, was a famous example of the friction that sometimes happened when a player wanted to grow some sort of beard.   I am not 100% certain but I believe he had something inserted into his last contract with the Yankees about being allowed to have a certain amount of facial hair/beard, before he died tragically on August 2 1979 Moustaches' of course were allowed on Yankee players but they had to be PERFECTLY neat and trimmed/groomed.     Don't ask me what George Steinbrenner thought this had to do with being able to hit a major league curve ball or to throw a 95 MPH fastball??!?!?!    But you cannot argue with success and the Yankees are by far and away the most successful Baseball team of all time (in fact it is not even close, they have won 40 pennants/appeared in 40 World Series, winning 27 of them!  Double the next closest team(s) of the Giants and Cardinals who have each won 19 pennants, so this year's National League Championship series will be the tie-breaker!!) Simply put.....the New York Yankees are the greatest American Sports Franchise, both in terms of winning/championships, and  $MONEY$!!!    I believe they were recently listed as worth 2.6 BILLION dollars (US) .... and the only other franchises that are worth more in the WORLD are European Soccer teams (3 or 4 of them, but  do know REAL MADRID is at the top of the list) which puts the Yankees in the top 5 most valuable sports franchises in the WORLD!!!!Interestingly, the Dallas Cowboys are right behind the Yanks, worth something like 2.35 Billion Dollars as of this year.....easily the most valuable NFL team (New England PAtriots are second) and also enough to be in the Top 10 of the world!

I like many sports, DaB, but not all of them so buff, not so much.    I wouldn't know about  many of the other pieces of history you brought to your post, I mostly remember ex-arch enemy Johnny Damon being told to trim his locks.  Thought he looked cute either way.

Now that just makes me want to go out and pay some more taxes so my local franchises can get a nice publicly-funded place to play in.

[/QUOTE]Oh man, you have hit the nail on the head Fatz!   it is OUTRAGEOUS that these fat cat filthy rich owners extort local towns/cities to provide a brand new stadium paid mostly with public money!    While I love the Patriots, Robert Kraft has made his previously massive fortune even more MASSIVE thanks to the deal he got for gillette stadium......what it boils down to, these guys are just greedy egomaniacal bastards!
