Advice for a noob...multi line poker

Post by MJ1234 »

hey guys,

New to VP (just a few months in) and I love playing multi line poker.

Any advice on what games to play with the goal to be getting a payout + comp = 100% (if possible) and where the best games are with this being the goal?

Or is it best to avoid these games if you're looking to get a high payout %?

I am a novice as well from what I heard, multi-line poker has nothing to improving your overall edge, in the long run it seems like it evens out with single line games, except penalties for a misplay is much greater.

The formula depends on how much you play and what comps you actually use from the casino.

On a casino visit theoretical example, 800 hands of max bet quarter denomination 9-6 Jacks or Better is 99.54% ER at optimal play. Thus the $1000 coin in at .46% edge will be $46. So based on the hotel room offer discount or completely free, food offers, bounce back cash, rate of cashback on casino card, if all that totals $46 or more, you are an advantage player. In reality $1000 coin in will get your hardly anything.

Or if you are good, you could push your casino host to give you more stuff to negate the edge even more. Some people value their offers, some people do not.

In the long run, you would need to hit your fair share or royal flushes to see the benefit but these days casinos are getting tighter will their comp offers.

alpax ... Off by a factor of 10. .46% of $1000 is $4.60.

As for multi-line, the return is still based on the return of the game being played and is no different than single line. The variance is different but the return over time should be the same.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies!

Yep, i understand that the payout is the same and the variance is different.

What i was trying to ask was which multi-line games offer the best returns?

I tried to use the vpfree2.com search engine but to search multi line games you must know the name of the game you are looking for as well, etc. Maybe there is another way to search for multi-line games i'm not aware about?

It depends on what you mean by 'returns'. I prefer the bigger payouts, so I choose TDB, a higher volatility game. I figure that, if I am going to play, I may as well try and win something significant.

Thanks for the correction! My math has been off as of late.

It still will require well more than $1000 coin in to get anything though.

Depends on your location. Most casinos I frequent, however, tend to have lower paybacks for multi-line games.

Getting over 100% on a multiline game with comps added in is pretty difficult, especially if you're outside of vegas or reno maybe.

Welcome to the forum. I generally only play multi-hand VP. I play the deuces' games because of their low volatility (I want to stay in as long as possible for the big hit) and ease of mastery.

A couple of suggestions if you're wanting to build comps and cash reward or you're playing at a new casino:

1) If you play with a spouse or friend both of you play on the same member's cards. This allows you to increase your "coin-in" play and increases your cash back/comps. Work as a team until you reach a higher level of comp or certain level of cash back. Then switch to the other's card to build them up. This has allowed us to reach the highest player level at several casinos even though we play lots of low denomination.

2) Learn about the casino's Average Daily Play and how its calculated as this impacts your cash back and player's level. Remember, that playing just a few hands a day will lower your ADP. On days when we may be leaving or just playing a short time, we often play on a family member's card to build up their credits. This also allows us to use their weekly free play if they aren't coming to the casino that week. Learn when the "new week for free play begins" and make trips accordingly. We often book Tuesday/Wednesday since new weekly money begins on Wednesday at our favorite. Therefore, we get this week's money and new money on Wednesday.

3) Take advantage of any "bonus or multiplier days". VP is often penalized by having to play 2 times coin in versus slots for the same comp points. But, as you rise in player level you may get better points/cash back and some casinos offer multipliers for play. At many casinos VP is excluded. Learn the rules and use them to your advantage.

4) If available, make it a point to meet the casino hosts and get to know them and them know you. They are often become your best casino friend.

Where are you playing?

This is really a great site, i appreciate all the comments everyone. Currently i'm playing mostly the $.25 and $1 DB 10/7 games at the Four Queens because of the returns and the comps. But i don't really like the casino due to the smoke and lack of options for using the comps.

Great advice on the multiplier days i'll keep an eye out. I know The Grand near me downtown vegas has some but their VP doesn't seem to be that great.
