Re: Casino issued me incorrect W2G - - now what to do?
Hard to know for sure without seeing the exact documents or transmittal info sent to the irs. The first post does state the information sent to the irs states that 7k was won in 2013. Since the win loss statement does not go to the irs, I would have to assume that their transmittal for 2013 to the irs showed the 7k winnings on Dec 31, 2013 as was stated in the first post. That is where the problem comes in if in fact that is what they did send to the irs.
Actually, I do not know what information the casino sent to the IRS. If, in fact, they send casino copies of the same W2-G that we customers receive, then the IRS would KNOW my win was not in 2013.
Perhaps this is why the CFO offered to send me a "corrected W2-G" ?? (Which I obviously don't want, as MINE is accurate dated Jan. 1)
By the way, does anyone know why casinos set their gaming day to end at 3 or 4 a.m. instead of midnight?

Yep. Right or wrong gang, what matters most is what the irs gets and that is what they will go by. I had a friend who made some small stock trades some years ago. The 1099 sent to him showed about 800k in trades when his trade was only 800 bucks and a loss at that. He figured at first no big deal. He would just enclose a note with his return and report the 800 offset by the 900 or so he paid for it. Sure enough, some months later, he received a notice from the irs proposing a huge tax increase due to a mis match. They had increased his AGI by 800k. He eventually got it squared away after many calls and letters to the brokerage house and the irs. It took months though to be finally resolved.

Doug the casino will only send the 2014 W2-G to the IRS at the end of the year. They don't send a copy of the win/loss statement to them because its up to you to reconcile your wins/losses with the IRS and not up to the casinos to do this on your behalf. Unfortunately you may want to consider discussing this with a tax professional and file an ammended 2013 return but let the tax professional answer that question for you. My advice would be to discuss this with a tax preparer if you have a professional do your 2014 return.
