The point is you need to master the technique to know to go for the royal. But luck is the most important factor because I only had a 1 in 47 chance to get the right card. I rest my case.
If you didn't know enough to go for the royal, your chance of hitting the royal dropped from 1 in 47 to zero.[/QUOTE]
Agreed, 4 to a Royal Flush is high on the strategy charts for most games (about 19.5 units). A knowledgeable player would not even hesitate to discard the 5th card to go for the Royal.

I only caught one in all the years of playing, but you still have to know enough to toss the flush every time. By the way, I have helped other less knowledgeable players sitting next to me land theirs at least half a dozen times. Feels good to help give them a shot at it. Nobody ever got mad at me either if they hit nothing.

The first time I ever tossed a flush and went for the royal on 4 to a royal was on my first serious video poker trip about 5 or 6 years ago. I had played video poker before but was basically winging it.
I spent quite a bit of time over at freeslots.com practicing on their free training program. BTW as much as I feel that the $80 a year for a gold membership is well worth it, I still like the training program over there better. I also bought 2 books, Video Poker Edge by Linda Boyd and Frugal Video Poker by Jean Scott.
So when the flush/4 to a royal popped up I said that I scratched my head it did not take me long to toss what I believe was the 7 of diamonds. I was indeed shocked when the royal flush popped up.
I have ran across the same scenario since then if I had to guess about 10 to 12 times. Including the first time mentioned in three of those cases I hit royals. I have had people next to me on two different occasions on 4 to a royal pop two royals on triple play. So luck does play a large part. You have got to be in the right place at the right time.
