Pay tables made easy

Post by vidpokerlooser »

Here's how it works...
A 95% machine takes 95% of YOUR money.
A 98% machine takes 98% of YOUR money.
That's all there is to it!
Need proof...just play ANY game here for an hour or so every day for a week, and keep track...need I say more?

Not quite. Given enough time any negative paytable will take ALL your money. That's pretty much why I only play positive games.

Of course, it's not really that simple. Someone could win on a 99% payback machine for many years and someone else could lose on a 101% payback machine. Although it will eventually even out, it can take a long, long time. OTOH, the individual who lost on the 101% payback machine would probably have done even worse on the 99% machine (about 2% worse) and vice versa. So, no matter how one does relative to the mean, they will do better by playing the best paytables available.

Have you ever found a 'positive' machine at an Indian casino?

Yes, I play them every week. And, for your next question ... do I win? Yep, I'm way ahead (over 20K for the last two years alone) and I only play for 6 months each year. I also know several other players who also know correct the strategy for the game and most of them win also.

So I assume you don't play in Arizona...perhaps you work for IGT!

The only Indian casinos I play are in MN. For the other 6 months of the year I live in LV and play there. I have also won there over the years and only play when I have a strong edge.

I have played around Tucson when visiting. They used to have some playable games but I've heard they are all gone. I haven't played there in over 3 years.

I don't work for IGT but I'm a retired programmer so I have a good idea how VP games operate. I also have read some articles/interviews over the years written about IGT games where they have described how they operate. You can find much of that info in the "The Video Poker Edge" by Linda Boyd.

I lose at Indian casinos in Arizona...and I don't work for IGT.  I'm retired, and don't work for anyone!

Linda's book gets mentioned now and again.  It's worth repeating that it's one of the good ones, and a good investment for any VP player.  I say that as someone who's bought more than my share of BAD books over the years on VP.  I have my own copy, and have given a few copies to friends who play VP.  You can sometimes find it in the "Games" section of your local bookseller, or it can be ordered online.
