Re: Peek and Play Poker Strategy Changes
Thanks Vman on posting various insights to approach this game, some parts I knew but learned some interesting perspectives. The Wizard at the WizardOfOdds forum talked about the Look Ahead Poker (in which you've played on your trip report to Vegas).game too, but that game gives you the ability to discard/burn the card from the topdeck, but it costs 3 extra credits rather than the 2 credits this game requires.

Vman,I don't understand your #9 example where the spade queen is the peek card. Why not just save the ace instead of the king? Thanks!

Because holding QK opens up more straight possibilities.

Actually unsure if I would ever play this game in a casino BUT its fun! Had 4 to a royal and threw it away when it was obvious I was going to brick it LOL. Then saw I could get a 4 to the royal draw hitting on 1 royal 2 out of the 3 times I had the chance. Good stuff!

Generally speaking the 5 + X games (my personal favorite is Super Times Pay at 5 + 1) do offer slightly higher EV. With all the tricky, though interesting, strategy changes for Peek and Play, I'd have to say skill definitely counts.

Actually no, because AKQ forces JT to be the only straight pull AND reduces your chances for miracle trips and totally eliminates full houses and quads. But it's something I definitely had to stick into a hand analyzer to verify. The expected value of AKQ wasn't that much lower.
The only thing I think I would change on the game would be maybe for one extra credit have an option to throw away the peek card as well and have the chance at a better card if for instance you have 4 clubs to hold and the peek card is a spade. Or if you draw 4 to a royal in one suit and a brick card in the hole of a different suit.
This Peek and Play is the multi-hand version of "Look Ahead" poker with some minor paytable tweaks. But really what you describe is exactly the game they should have pushed into a multihand version. Your suggestion as actually currently available in Single Hand version on "Game Star" machines as "Super Look Ahead" poker as alpax mentioned. Strategy is much, much easier for that game. Basically follow the strategy the paytable would normally dictate from the 6 cards available to you. See how I "burned" the next card from the deck since I paid 8 credits vs. 7.

Thanks for answering, Vman. I'll mull all this over!

Here's some more for TDB:Hold a high card suited with the peek rather than an unsuited Ace: from AsKh9d6c5d + 8h hold Kh + 8hHold a low pair rather than three suited cards with one high card: from Js9h9d6c5s + 3s hold 9h9d + 3sHold a high card with an unsuited high-card peek rather than a low pair: from Js9h9d6c5s + Qh hold Js + QhI have yet to see any comprehensive strategy for this one on the Interwebs, anyone else having more luck?
