Re: Roadhouse Tunica
I'm 99.99% sure there is a difference in the machines...
There is no doubt about it. I have played over 35,000 hands on the newer machines at New Orleans, Boisier City, Tunica and Biloxi and have yet to hit anything over a rag 250. I did get AWAK in New Orleans but that was a made hand. It is just incredible how many dead hands there are on these machines.
I was talking with 2 of the locals and was telling them that the old slant tops used to play pretty well. And they both agreeded and said that the new machines have run everyone out. Which was evident because it was a Friday night and there were maybe 5 people playing poker at the Roadhouse.

I've only played VP recreationally in a serious manner for about an year now. I would like to know the answer to the question Mr. Dawes is wondering as well.
The part that I do agree with about the new machines needing a higher bankroll is that new machines obviously should have more powerful CPUs (central processing units) to allow you to play faster 800-1000 hands an hour at the 3 speed setting where the old machines frequently stall during card deals and you can play 600 hands an hour even trying to play as fast as possible.
More hands on a negative expectation game equates to a bigger loss?
Well I can't speak for others but that's not the case with me. I never play at fastest speed setting, for the exact reason you brought up. When the newer style machines were introduced it didn't take me long to figure out the last thing I wanted to do was see more of the type of hands I got. In fact I slowed my pace of play down compared to the way I play the old machines. When I play the old style machines I'm keyed in and concentrating on the cards, I don't let anything interfere or distract me, I play fast and trust the numbers and odds. I played the fool of the newer style machines and they just didn't deliver, they still haven't and I don't think they ever will.

I rarely go to Tunica on the weekend but the last time I was at the Roadhouse there was only one person playing poker. I used to really enjoy playing at the Roadhouse but when they took out all the old machines and replaced them I just can't play there anymore, the machines just ran me off.

I played single coin quarters over most of the past two years. This allowed me to play much longer than the average recreational player. When you play 1,000 hands an hour for days on end, I think you get a little better picture of what's happening here. I also had a chance to play a good mix of older machines and newer machines. I didn't notice any long term financial differences between the two, but the newer machines do seem to have longer dry spells which probably busts more players. It didn't matter to me because while playing single coin quarters I never walked out of the casino with empty pockets.I'm not overly concerned about this issue as I don't think the machines are rigged or have any conspiracy issues. I recently made the decision to play max coins and had to increase my bankroll to a point where the fear of busting didn't affect my decisions. Busting players is a significant and consistent cash cow for casinos. If you are not sitting at the machine when the rare hands happen, you lose no matter what the age of the machine.

I play video poker all over the country. I have really not noticed any difference. You have good days and bad days. When the dust clears I am close to the expected payout. The poorer the pay table the worse I do (over the long run)

i think your last statement confirms what we mentioned before. fewer players means it takes longer for the machines to go thru a cycle. my own experience has been that when there is lots of action, i see more players winning. one just needs to be lucky enough to be sitting at the right machine, when it happens.

Well the weather was nice this past weekend in Tunica; that's the only good news I have to report.
I opened up playing some Hot Roll Poker at Sam's Town and didn't do anything.
I then played for a while at Hollywood and didn't do anything.
I went over to Roadhouse to check in and I played very little there and this was because, in my opinion their selection of video poker is poor. I messed up the bed and threw a shower towel onto the counter to make it appear I was in the room and I then went to Horseshoe to pick up my cruise voucher, didn't gamble one thin nickel at Horseshoe and went back to Hollywood.
I checked into Hollywood and rested a bit. Got cleaned up and had dinner at their buffet, the prime rib was pretty tasty. I then went to play and couldn't hit anything, got dealt 4 to the royal three times in aspan of 20 minutes and playing 10 play; I didn't hit one. The Givenchy obviously wasn't working so I took a break and drove down to Walgreens and picked up a bottle of Jovan Musk, I figured maybe Tunica wasn't used to Givenchy so I got something more fitting for the region. After dousing myself with the bottle I went back to playing at Hollywood, still no luck hitting any premium hands. I did get dealt quad 6's on 10 play but that disappeared back into the machine.
At the end of the night I was able to recoup some of my losses courtesy of hitting quad 4's with a kicker 3 times in 30 minutes.
Bottom line for me; a losing trip this time, about 2k.
Edited to add: I was totally kidding about the Jovan Musk...

sorry to hear about the bad results, ted. seems like there are many posters who have had a tough time in tunica. was there much action on the VP machines? when a place needs to fly people in from all over the country for free to get players, i think it is a bad sign.

"Pushing the cycle", I brought up this while talking to my casino host there a while back. My host there is a very nice lady and she was asking if here was anything she could do for me and wanted to know why I hadn't been playing there like I used to. I pretty much told her like it was, I couldn't hit squat there anymore, the machines were starving to death, I was the only one there that day dumb enough to try their luck. My exact words when she asked why I thought my luck had turned so sour there was, "because of so few players playing there I was close to be the only one pushing the cycle".

Sorry to hear about the bad results, Tunica's tough, if you would have let me know you were there I could have caught up to you, maybe next time. Jovan Musk is still a bit high class for the current crop of folks attending the casinos now days, I'm not sure where to get it but I know it's called B O Stank.
