I have always been told that doubling up is a bad bet, so I never do it. I'm not sure why. Maybe some of the math guys can explain.

There's a guy I see frequently at Caesar's AC who pounds 3-4 machines at a time and always doubles up until he gets a hand pay or loses. I've seen him get some big hand pays doing this. I've also seen him literally smash the screen when he loses.

I had a casino math geek explain the odds to me once --- it was quite a complicated explanation and, frankly, I never completely grasped the equation. But consider this: Most casinos with the doubling feature disable it for wins above a certain amount. That says a lot.

Thanks Rookie, I rarely do double up, only on small amounts when I do. I have seen the same thing with a player at Harrahs, playing the $5 machines, wins big or loses big.I just rarely have any luck even with small amounts. If there is duece to be picked, I can find them!!!!!

Sounds like he went off on a tangent and maybe he also gave you incorrect advice.
It's like the game war, high card wins. But ties just push instead of "going to war". There is no house edge in doubling up, i.e. has 100% average return. And many state laws mandate that "double up" features MUST return 100%. This is also why you don't get player's club points while doubling up.
In actual play though, I never really do it. Maybe on high pair sometimes. Basic VP is usually swingy enough for me without the double up feature.

I like doing it occasionally on a high pair to add a little excitement. I mean, I play JOB. My winning percentage is maybe 50%. When I lose, I sometimes see on the reveal that none of the four choices would have trumped an ace or face card. That really ticks me off and should discourage DU forever. They give you zero chance and brag about it to boot.

Yeah that's annoying. This set-up probably also makes me play it less. But sometimes you get an Ace and can't lose either. I've never kept a record on it, but I do feel I'm roughly 50/50.
And yeah, double up isn't a bad way to add a little zing to JoB.

FAA I agree with you: casino's should give at least 1 chance of an over card. I haven't hit the double up button in many many years.

I agree with vman 100%. Just like when we were kids, if the swing goes too high, we fell off and this case could lose our bankroll for the day that much quicker.
