Re: your machine
the conversation i have had with one poster has gotten nasty, but all i was trying to point out was that even the math folks do things at the casino, not based on math.
I hardly think that choosing which machine to play, when all other factors are absolutely equal, on the basis of previous play, is a significant non math activity.
A decision has to be made. Perhaps a coin flip would be better?
i agree, it is not a big deal for me. but, he stated he would choose the machine because of past performance. and, then he said, if he lost on that machine, he would choose the other machine. why? i would have expected the answer to be something like a coin flip or it does not matter, but with each option, he had a specific reason to choose a particular machine. why would past performance have any bearing on machine selection?

He was wanting to see if the good run would continue on it anyway, even though he knows it should make no difference. Everyone likes to see good patterns to continue. I tended to play the unit I got the dealt royal at Flamingo more in the future...hoping it would continue...nope...

vman, of course he was hoping his good fortune would continue, that is obvious and who can blame him. i started the thread to simply point out that some who believe in the math, will still make decisions, not based on the math. how else could one justify selcting a machine based on past experience or acting on a premonition? i guess what i was trying to point out got lost, it came accross as being 'nit picky'. but, that is how i see it when a poster takes the time to point out another player could have made a different play and gained a couple of hundreths of percent of possible advatage. nit picky. now, as far as the guru from vegas, my original post never made mention of him. but, he took the time to point out that i had made a mistake by not listing comfort and lighting as possible reason to select a machine, while everyone can read that i mentioned those very points, that he says i should have stated. he was obviously wrong. so, while he has no problem pointing out someone else's mistakes, he cannot admit to his own. draw your own conclusion.

I'm not big on defending bob because I do think he is particularly harsh on anyone that isn't making the optimal VP choice (suboptimal choices happen on this forum do happen a lot though). But the points you're trying to call him out on, unless I misread what he/you wrote, aren't substantial.
If all other things are equal (i.e. game returns are identical), then he would look for other possible factors. (comfort, speed, etc.). If nothing else tangible makes the machines different, then I see no problem with him choosing the machine that did better for him in the short term. It's not like he is claiming that the hotter machine short term is a better one long term.
And as far as him pointing out that you didn't consider comfort or speed. I don't think he meant that as a slam on you. If so, bob really needs to tone it down...lol But those are points worth mentioning as they do matter if everything else is identical.

Sounds like Bob may be getting a little more cranky in his old age. Maybe he's not doing that well at the casino lately. It happens...

the whole point is that I DID mention some of the very points he says i left out. he often points out others poor choices and mistakes, but cannot admit when he was wrong.

Maybe instead of Bob being wrong he was, instead, a little weak on being right?
Hank Fonda said that in a John Wayne movie once.

Probably glossed over your post and missed that you initially mentioned those points. I don't feel like that was intentional, at least I hope not.
I've been known to read some posts too quickly. And I definitely don't read the entire content of any discussion between DaBurglar and Tedlark...

I agree with Vman. "Bob", as he is known here, probably quickly summarized the contents of the thread in his mind and offered a response intended to be helpful. Silly that a discussion over which machine to choose has turned into a tiff. Bob has always been helpful to me on VP matters. I have no problems with highly intelligent people who sometimes lack the social graces --- it is not uncommon. Bob is very direct and a mutual friend once described him as someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly... or silently. I, for one, am grateful that he offers his VP experience and research to the members of this forum.
