I think he meant when playing Bonus Deuces or "Colorado Deuces" where the full house is 3 for 1 and either pair is an acceptable choice. If you pick the pair with the card in the middle, variance might go up (not sure about this...) because the middle column has a 2,5,2 pay line distribution instead of 3,3,3 for the other 4 columns.

Out of curiosity, I tried the deuces wild strategy test.

I scored eight out of ten. One of my two "errors" was, when confronted with a choice between two absolutely equal holds (each was an inside straight), picking the "wrong" one.

My other "error" was not an error at all - dealt a deuce, four and five of hearts eight of clubs and ten of spades, I correctly held just the deuce, only to be advised the "correct" hold was deuce, four, five of hearts!

For the pay table in question, that advice is just flat out wrong.

OMT, I had the same issues. They keep wanting us to go for the straight flush when it's just not worth it. I'd rather take my chances and hold just the deuce. Their inside straight analysis with you mirrors their two pair analysis with me. Their arbitrary choice is just as good as ours. It's just so silly.

There are some DW hands where I personally feel it's better for us to go against the math based strategies.  We play mostly quarters, so we would rather have a shot at a royal or wild royal than fret about losing a few cents.  For example, we both keep A-10s, A-Ks. AQs & A-Js.  We made these adjustments a few weeks ago and so far we have been happy with our choice.  My wife has hit two royals with these bad hands and she talked me into it.   With the deuces in the deck, it seems like a decent possibility.  Many times, you get a flush or something else, so it's not a complete bust.

FAA,
The question is related to holding just one pair when playing deuces in which 4K pays more than FH. I don't play Spin much but the Center position is a crucial position for the other lines. One of the recommendations I read about Spin is to leave this position open for possible deuces to increase the potential hits. Since I don't play it much I'm not sure if that is mathematically correct.
