-in the 40's and 50's, the country had been in and coming out of ww2. these were exceptional conditions. -in the 40's, 50's, 60's there were many more tax deductions/loopholes. the higher earners today have very few deductions/loopholes.  -instead of concentrating on rates, look at federal tax revenues, courtesy the OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET ; 1980- $517 b1990- $1032 b2000- $2025 b2014- $3021 b in 35 years, the ferderal governemnt tax receipts have increased by 6x, and they still run a defecit. according to the INFLATION CALCULATOR, $1 in 1980, would be equal to $2.83 today. again, how much do they need, keep feeding the beast, it wants more.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone
deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them
something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's
for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job. I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's up. That
ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many
groups the government in the on a regular basis. Look, if you
ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that,
I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is
play ball. And as for this non-college I got two words for
that: learn to type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out
with the rent you're in for a big surprise.I'm hungry. Let's get a taco.

You should adjust by an additional factor of 1.538 at the least for population growth for ages 18-65. Still a gap vs. 1980, but 4.35X vs. 6X doesn't sound nearly as bad.

then you would also need to factor in productivity gains including technology advances, that hardly existed in the 80's. the cost of each person served should be less, with those gains. i am 61, easing into retirement and i believe you stated you are in your mid 30's. i've paid taxes for over 40 continous years and seen some money spent wisely, while watching a lot of financial fraud, abuse and waste. the goal of being re-elected has been the motivating factor for a lot of spending. i have saved/invested our money and we will be just fine. but, i worry about your generation and the debt you are inheriting. i have nothing to gain and you have everything to lose. if your generation is happy with an ever increasing nanny state, that is fine with me. but, if folks do not believe what has happened in detroit, cypress, puerto rico and greece, cannot happen to them, they are mistaken.  keep asking the government for more protections, more regulations, more safe guards, they will gladly give it to you. but, it will cost you. good luck.

I learned some valuable stuff on this thread.

I am not sure if I am wrong about this, but if the waitresses are tipped in cash, is that documented too? Thought it was was credit card transactions where the taxes are accounted for on the payroll system.

They are supposed to report cash tips but who really knows how much they received each time? I normally tip in cash and on those rare times when I put a tip "on the card" I increase the amount of the tip because I know that the amount is seen by not just the server I tipped.

I have found out that cash tips are appreciated more.

I recall that people were on the honor system when it comes to reporting restaurant tips with cash. Unless it is a place where the tips are shared.

The times I go to a restaurant I pay for the entrée with credit to get the bonus points for restaurants and cash for the tip. So they can possibly enjoy the full amount.

I'm with you there. The one that gets me is most now share tips. I just don't get that one. I have been a big tipper in the past  only if there not sharing the tip and the service was great. I even ask these days if there sharing the tip and if yes the tip gets smaller. I hate that the weak workers get part of the great workers tips, that is BS.

was just at cherokee and one of the servers came by for drink orders. she was soooo pregnant, she looked like she might have the baby right on a VP machine. didn't need anything but called her over. gave her $5, if she would just go sit down for 5 minutes. she looked really tired.
