Half empty or half full?.......

Post by pjmaui »

I'm in the mood to ***** about something - so here it is....
Why is it that so many people playing video poker find it more important to complain about what they could have won, as opposed to being happy with what they won? It's all about the kicker.
The most vivid example of this was a few years back at Arizona Charlies in Vegas. Lady playing next to me was having a fit. GD this and F'n that and hit the machine. DDB .25 single hand. She caught quad aces with no kicker. Myself I am happy with a 200.00 payoff for a 1.25 bet. I asked her I said lady, what is the problem? Her response - I didn't get the F'n kicker!!! well boo hoo. Almost every single time someone hits 2s,3s, 4s or aces they will complain about no kicker. When I catch one of these quads I am as happy as can be. Then the dumb**** will walk by and comment oh, too bad, no kicker. This annoys the crap out of me. I think next time one of these jerk-offs catches aces with a kicker I will comment to them - Oh damn, that sucks, too bad you didn't catch a royal. poor you!

Or you could say:"Awe too bad, you caught a kicker." That'll throw them for a loop...

Never look a gift horse in the mouth as the old saying goes, or take what you get.Keno players are notorious for saying "just one more number" They get 7 of 8 and get  upset they did not get the last number. Meanwhile 7 of 8 pays around 1600 to 1. Gamblers are never happy.

Is it just me? I do not understand the negative mentality of people. Last night I was at Fiesta, guy playing next to me was playing DDB. He was dealt three aces. Twice he sez all I need is ace and a kicker. Well, he caught the ace anyway. My reaction is "excellent!" you caught the ace! He response is "damn it, no kicker." Now am I just the hopeless optimist, or are most people that gamble just that greedy? Between Red Rock and Fiesta yesterday I went up 1600.00. Caught my 166th royal at Red Rock which is actually the 4th I've had dealt to me. Caught aces with no kicker at Fiesta and was not upset with no kicker. I was thrilled - come on people - it is a win! I see things this way - It can usually be better, It can always be worse.

Its greed pj, plain and simple. I have no problem either of accepting the aces without the kicker. At Rio there was a woman playing JOB next to me and she caught aces several times and was content with it. I personally, cringed, being used to playing TDB or DDB. I would have liked to meet you when I was in Las Vegas last week. Oh well, maybe next time.

I somewhat understand the mentality of these players as there are chances they also play slots or keno, a big hit is rare to come by and when it happens the players they want to get as much as they can get.

When playing DDB properly, getting a set of quad aces is less frequent as much recreational players think as the strategy is aggressive on the aces. It equates to 1 in about 4252 hands on average (with or without the kicker). So it will require 6-8 hours of play to see one.

You can give people a friendly reminder that it takes 1 in about 16200 rounds to see that desired 4 aces with the kicker hand. Even so, that payout can be wiped out in the next 4-6 hours if they run into a cold streak. Chances are, they will splurge the winnings on commodities to wipe it quicker.

I think it's fine to lightheartedly say "damn, didn't get the kicker," but it's silly to get legitimately angry over it.
