Re: Tax on Winnings?
How did Harrah's catch that error so quickly? I'd have been sorely tempted to try to keep as quiet and calm as possible knowing that it would have taken a LOT of $35 full houses to damage a company valued at $15 billion.
You have to be careful about taking advantage of any machine malfunction. The casinos take that seriously. I have a friend who did that at the Isle of Capri here in Black Hawk. They threatened to take legal action against him, but settled for banning him from the casino permanently.
His case was a "dream come true" story. The bill reader on his $1 slot machine failed, and was registering $100 in credits for ANY bill. He first saw that after putting in a $20. He began putting in $1's and cashing out after each spin. He was stupid - too greedy - and didn't bug out when the first coin fill was needed. They got him after the second or third quick coin fill, by checking the machine accounting and comparing it to the stack of bills in the machine.

[/QUOTE] The casinos don't tolerate any crap in Vegas, which is kind of refreshing. They seem to have the legal system well in hand, andnuisance lawsuits don't seem to worry them much.

I don't know if I'd describe it as casinos having the legal system in hand, but they can definitely afford better lawyers than the average player. In my friend's case he and the casino went back and forth for a period of about two months, but since he really couldn't afford a lawyer he ended up agreeing not to visit that casino again.

After the first 3, some friends started gathering and before I knew it, there were dozens of players watching. That got the attention of the cameras and a slot attendant was dispatched right away.
They actually said congratulations! I guess the only thing I did wrong was too continue playing, but the attendant said anyone would do the same thing. I guess they didn't even worry about a $315 mistake. They actually seemed quite pleased that it was such a small amount...relatively speaking.
I figured for all the times I hit the hold button that didn't work then hitting draw and lost a winning hand, it was a little justice.
They've always been fair to me at Harrah's, a craps dealer made a mistake that I didn't catch (probably ordering a drink at the time) and didn't pay me. Table games manager searched me out and gave me the chips telling me the camera caught the error. I was impressed they went to that much trouble.

In my friend's case, the reason that the casino gave him a really hard time was that he was taking advantage of the malfunction for a while, through several coin fills. They asked him why he continued playing so long and he replied (I love this) that since the casino almost always took his money, God told him to stay and get some of it back. He really said that!
I've been playing for many years and have never been the beneficiary of something like that. Not even one single dollar. Harrumph.

CD, he should have not cashed out - just kept inserting $1 until he reachedthe desired??? total he felt comfortable with. No need to even spin. Hand pay when he left. I can't imagine what I would do under those circumstances. How much would you have gone for? Zippo? Few thou? Til you ran out of 1's? Tell us!

Oh, isn't it interesting that the casino is not responsible for machine errorsunless it benefits them, in which case the customer customer might neverbe aware of the error. I've been on machines that were so tight there had to be something wrong.

Anyone know if TITO's are traceable from, say, a malfunctioning machine?

CD - Than is a such a funny reply, almost wish I'd have thought of that. Both are machine malfunctions - not sure what I'd do in your friends case. Guess the oppurtunity would have to be present to really say, but doubt if I'd continue. Now if it was a vending machine, that would be different! LOL
As for TITO, it could be traced with a standard barcode system but don't know if they are...anyone else know that?

That's a good question; I don't know. You'd think that part of the bar code on the ticket would show the machine generating the ticket.
I did have a problem once with a ticket that wouldn't be accepted by any VP machines, by any of the ticket-cashing kiosks, or by the scanners at any cashier window. The ticket looked fine to me, it wasn't smudged, marred, wrinkled or anything like that. It was a pretty big one, about $700, and I was getting kind or riled when I couldn't cash it. A manager came over and I took him to the original machine, which still showed that I'd cashed out at $700, though he said that wasn't necessary. At this place they could override the scanning and enter the information manually using the machine number, so the manager told the cashier to do that. Turned out to be no big deal.
They never did check out that machine, at least while I was there. They tried something I'd already tried - feeding the ticket into the machine that generated it to see if it would accept it and print another ticket.
