Bob Dancer LasVegasAdvisor 10-6-2015 Article
I have been anticipating this article for about month since it is supposed to be inspired by the posts on this forum. It came out today.
Dad, I'm Going to Marry a Professional Gambler. We Want Your Blessing!
I can assume not every "bride to be" who is looking to marrying a professional gambler has a parent or aunt/uncle that can legitimately tell if the "groom to be" is a successful gambler. Not every adult gambles to have such knowledge.

Bob Dancer is selling a dream. The dream is that by adopting his strategies anyone can make a good living playing video poker. I'm sure he knows that living his dream is a one in a million pot shot and he knows a lot more people who have failed than have won. If my daughter wanted to marry a professional gambler, my dream would be that she would come to her senses and find someone with a real future. Family matters are a serious issue and not something to use as a ploy to sell more books and software. Sorry, but that's the way I feel about it.

In that article, it didn't sound like he was selling anything. Indeed quite cautionary about someone pursuing being a Professional Gambler.
In that article, it didn't sound like he was selling anything.
Does anyone think Bob Dancer has a radio show and a weekly column because he is such a nice guy that he wants everyone to compete with him at the casinos? A successful professional player living on his winnings alone wouldn't sell the secrets of his trade for any price. Bob Dancer is a marketer who happens to use video poker to sell his products and services. He is also paid by casinos to sell players the idea that video poker can be beat. I'm not saying he is a bad guy or that his strategies are not worth considering. I'm just stating the obvious.

Just a bizarre column of no relevance, except to the hardest of hardcore players. Certainly not worthy of a thread.

Although it may be structured as one of those "My Rich Uncle" type stories, Dancer is selling a dream or describing a world that there are many people who win from gambling. Truthfully the number of problem gamblers outnumber the successful ones, there are many hotlines that help people who have the problems. Where does the money come from if the successful ones are abundant? Certainly not from trees and casinos will cease to exist.

If you examine the first part of the article, it will refer to that the posts from this forum was the motive for the article.
Recently on the videopoker.com internet forum there were some posters saying they would hate to hear such a phrase from their daughters. That forum is primarily frequented by recreational gamblers who don't know any, or many, successful professional gamblers. I happen to know a lot of successful professionals.
Sad part is, I don't recall the thread on this site from where this discussion came from.
But I think Bob was mostly trying to be objective. He definitely wasn't suggesting people to go out and become "pro gamblers".

It was probably a response to one of my posts. What bothers me about Bob Dancer is he is profiting from the potential misfortunes of others. His books, shows and posts are all designed to legitimize gambling as a profession. His claims may be true, but I can't imagine all the pain and suffering that has and is being caused to people trying to duplicate his reported results. I think it is the responsibility of any business person who sells products and services to the public to consider whether it is ethical and prudent to do so. His well worded disclaimer that "Most people won't be able to do what he does" falls on deaf ears to those who are most vulnerable. If you chose this profession for yourself fine, but promoting gambling to the public as a career is wrong and anyone who doesn't think this is a problem is lying to the mirror. Real careers are based on helping and serving others. Professional gambling does nothing to advance society or help anyone except the gambler himself. Helping recreational players play the best games, play longer or have more fun is a good thing. Promoting gambling as a career is not.
