Re: TDB Hold Question
I love this game and try to play it right but sometimes you have to throw out the rules and go with your gut.
Sounds like you are having fun, which is supposed to be the point of playing video poker in the first place. Those 3 cent hands are not going to make you rich or send you to the poor house. Using computer perfect strategy will allow you to play more hands, but it won't satisfy your gut.

I love this game and try to play it right but sometimes you have to throw out the rules and go with your gut. If you ever get the feeling that you should deviate from the proper strategy, the best move is to go lie down until the feeling goes away.It is NEVER a sensible play to hold RF3 over a high pair (assuming that's the correct play --- sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't) because you have a "hunch." Yes you'll collect on it 1-in-1081 times, but every time you deviate from perfect strategy it costs you EV.To be sure, it's your money you're betting with and you can do whatever you want, but if you want to succeed at this game, learn and follow the correct strategy without exception.

More exactly, according to the Wizard of Odds calculator, in TDB 9/7 you should hold RF3 over JJ, QQ or KK only if the RF draw does not contain both an Ace and Ten. You should hold AA over any RF3.

have a question that i am sure has been asked, but too lazy to search. on 8/5 or 7/5 TDB or DDB, when dealt 3 to a royal, a high pair and a throw away card, what is the correct hold? presume the high pair is not aces. thanks.

You are supposed to take the sure win and that's generally what I do but I know many that go for the Royal & get it. I have myself but it breaks my heart when I throw away 2 queens and get two more. When people sitting beside me ask what they should do I tell them the rule is to keep the pair. I still believe in the gut instinct because out of the few times I've gone for the Royal it's normally because I have not hit a four of a kind all night. I know about the mathematics & statistics but it's still gambling and I believe now and then you need to go with what you feel. It's all part of the fun.

Since the flush only pays 5 for 1, the math says high pair over 3 to a Royal, every time.

I always hold the other suited face card and that includes the 10.

My opinion, in a word - hogwash.
If you play hundred of thousands of hands, then maybe the math starts to take hold. If you are like me, and go on 3-4 day casino trips, the relatively few VP hands that I play are all based on good fortune. Sure a 9/7 is better than an 8/5, but the few extra spins will not matter much during a playing trip.
For me, I also enjoy TDB, and getting lucky with an AWAK makes me smile.
