Any ideas why?
I haven't been playing much lately but my wife talked me into going last night, we both should have stayed home. A guy and his wife were playing beside me from the Nevada area, didn't catch the town but it must be near Reno as that's where they said they normally played. Neither of them were happy with our local vp to which I replied that I hadn't been happy with it for a long time. They ask me a question a couldn't answer about the vp machines and I figure someone here could provide me with an idea. The question was why all the vp machines lock up or pause about every 15 minutes, you can hit the deal button over and over again but it won't deal the cards until it's ready, usually about 3-5 seconds. The machines have been doing it for a long time but I never knew why, any ideas?

I believe that is called re-seeding. Then again maybe not.

Not sure what re-seeding is. I can play closer to my home and none of their vp machines ever do it.

simple, the machine is pausing to decide how much money to take from you. they don't pause in your area KK, they already decided to take every penny you have.

Still got a little left but there's no question they would take it given the opportunity. It's funny you said that though because that's what the guy said.

Is this happening at a CET property? I have noticed it happening at all CET properties since they installed their new machines a year or so ago. It happens nowhere else when I play. I have noticed it both in Tahoe and Las Vegas. I find it very strange and have pretty much stopped playing at CET properties at least partly because of that.

I notice a pause from time to time at Mohegan Sun, but for now, there does not seem to be a pattern to it. I used to just call it sticky buttons, not anymore. I don't know the answer though.

The pause happens periodically so that the video poker and slots machine can do internal auditing for record keeping purposes before allowing the game to continue.
The older the machine, the longer it takes. Usually slot machines are replaced more often than video poker machines thus it is more noticeable on VP than slots. My local casino has newer Game King models so the pause happens in a split second. Vegas locals casinos have the older machines in which make the pauses more noticeable. Video poker players play at a faster pace hence they run into these periodic updates.
On one of the gambling with an edge episodes from late 2014, Mr. Dancer has addressed this topic before talking to the guest coming in from fan mail. I forgot which episode it was.

Yes, I get the pause routine at CET a lot. It always throws me in a panic. I think that I will get my bet deducted twice if I hit Deal or Draw again, so I fight the urge and have just been riding it out.
