Re: Thousand to One Pay Out

I dug out my book. I haven't read it in more than 20 years. The game is jacks or better. The Author indicates that his strategy is based on a very popular 6/5 payout scale with a 1,000 pay out for the royal. I guess he determined that it is best to hold 3 of the royal flush because of the low payout for the full house and the flush.

That was very popular 20 years ago? What crappy location was the author playing in? That's a 95.51% game. And again high pair would still be better than AKT, AQT, and AJT suited. Also AT suited should only be held over an Ace only if there is no "flush penalty". So his math was at least a bit off. But as mentioned earlier in the thread, a lot of misinformation in older gaming literature.

I don't feel comfortable giving the Author's name since his methods seem to be in question. I read one review of the book that indicated that it was for the very new player.

They never advertised it as any kind of promo so I am guessing it was just a programming mistake. But I had always been told only a chip change can alter a paytable.I don't have any special technical knowledge of how pay schedules can be changed, but I imagine that the starting point for a progressive, especially when expressed in dollars and cents, can be keyed in independently of the pay schedule. In 2012, Hollywood Casino opened in Columbus, Ohio, and there has essentially never been anything worth playing there, what some call a video poker wasteland.  But it is a captive audience and I don't believe either the casino workers or the patrons are on average too video poker savvy.  A couple years after the casino opened, they put in a bank of six connected 5-play machines, each hand having a separate royal flush progressive meter that progressed 1% for each coin played per hand.  They were the typical terrible pay schedules with 4 game choices:  8-5 TDB, 7-5 DDB, 6-5 Jacks or Better, and 6-5 Bonus Deluxe.  Each hand's progressive reset to $1000.00 when a royal flush was hit on that hand, but the other meters continued to progress.  There was even an All Hands Royal meter for someone receiving a dealt royal when playing all 5 hands. The reason I'm recounting this story was that these were nickel machines, so the reset value was at 20,000 coins rather than the typical 4000 coins!  Even with those poor full house/flush payoffs there was a typical player edge of from just under 6% to nearly 7%.  And the machines lasted 10 weeks before the casino changed the reset values to $200.00 per line.Of course, there was no guarantee to winning, but the odds were in your favor to the tune of around $50 per hour, not considering their meager comps.  One needed to invest a bit under $550 on average to get a royal that averaged a little less than $1100, so one would only break even if it took 2 cycles to get that royal.  But you really only had to play only 1/5th as long to hit the royal since you could play 5 hands at once.  And if you adjusted your strategy based on the extreme royal payoff, the cycle was reduced to 32,000 hands (or 6400 deals).I did hit for $1000 with my first $100 invested, but ironically, it was not due to a royal.  The best EV game was TDB and I was lucky enough to get a dealt AWAK to win $200 on each of the 5 hands.Oh, by the way, I did sit beside someone that first week who thought it wise to play one coin per hand at a time and, as luck would have it, he hit the royal.  In this case, it was not the typical difference of $62.50 vs. $1000.  Since these were nickels, he only won $12.50 instead of the progressive that was a little over $1100.
