Need your opinion on GutShot Straight Strategy...
Double Double Bonus Video Poker...
When you get dealt 4 cards to a Gutshot Straight...
2 threw 10 with no pair and no face card and no ace (With a 2 3 or 4 included in the hand)
The correct strategy is to go for the Gutshot Straight...
That being said...
There are only four cards that will give you a winning hand with the correct strategy...
Personal Note: In my case it's very rare the Gutshot Straight fills in for a winning outcome...
Now lets use this hand as an example...
5-H, 6-D, 7-S, 9-C, 2-D
If you were to dump the hand or even keep the 2-D then the odds get a lot better to get
a break even or get a winning hand...
The only hands not available would be Straights that the 2 does not apply and the Royal Flush...When keeping the 2-D...
What is your opinion concerning this scenario...
Seems to me dumping the hand will give you a better
chance to at least break even or get a winning hand...
When using the correct strategy for this hand you will have to draw a nine to win...
Question is:
Use the correct strategy?
Dump the hand?
What would you do...

I do it because the math tells me to. Filling in gutshots for 20 credits is fun! And the fact you get 20 credits when you hit is why it's the best play. Sure you make a paying hand more often from discarding 5, but many of those hands only pay 5 instead.
If you don't like drawing to it though, just throw everything away. It's a pretty small difference in equity.

Scenario 1: I'm on a vp vacation, only a few a year. It's my last day and I am down. Time to gamble it up more. Throw away the gut straight draws and go for more opportunities of premium hits.
Scenario 2: I'm at my local casino playing my usual bank of machines I play at 3 or more times a week. Math play always! Keep the guts shots and go for the 20 credit straights.

I believe it was Bob Dancer who said the secret to VP success is knowing when to throw away a valuable hand in order to try for an even more valuable one. Here the secret is knowing when to keep a 4-outer even though you get more "hits" from tossing it. Note however that in Multi-Strike when you are trying to get to the next level it's generally better to toss your gutshot draws. Good Mathematics!
