Need info on Assault Weapons....

Despite the fact that the NRA has bought and paid for enough members of congress to ensure its narrow, and pointlessly bloody agenda,  I myself seek to learn and develop my own opinions apart from their slanted agenda.    So explain to me...someone, WHY weapons like AR-15s are so vital to the Second Amendment?    The purpose of weapons LIKE AR-15s has NOTHING to do with why the second amendment was even constructed and applied.....Also, WHAT is the issue with the NRA's (and thus its sales agents in CONGRESS) vehement and intractable opposition to preventing individuals on both the NO FLY lists and the Terrorist Watch lists from LEGALLY purchasing a weapon like the AR-15?
