Thanks for the info from the Desert Lands of NO Gambling TEXAS!!!
I would love to see the individual questions since survey questions especially from biased interest groups can always be worded to create the impression they want.
For example:
The Houston area is the largest refinery area in the US with plants from Exxon, SHell, Chevron, Valero, Dow, Exxon Chemical, etc. Local refineries and chemical plants constantly release pollutants. Air quality tests show multiple chemicals in our polluted air. Air quality tests even show some of our local air contains nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen! Don't you agree this air should be cleaned up to remove these chemicals?
Why yes, of course!!!!
I rest my case.

This poll was about the expansion of gambling in Florida. Currently casino gambling in Florida is limited to native owned casinos and a few paramutuals. The five year deal with the tribes expired and two more Florida Counties voted to allow gambling. There is a big debate in Florida over expanded gambling. One developer wants to build a billion dollar casino resort in Miami and has already purchased the land.
There are two major forces opposed to gambling expansion in Florida. The major force is Disney. Disney is opposed to gambling expansion because they are afraid of losing convention business. They say it would tarnish their "family friendly" image, but I think they are thinking more about their profits. The other force is the moral crusaders. Florida outside of the Miami/West Palm Beach area is very conservative. Casinos are the "devil's work" and you know the rest. Personally, I am a religious person but don't see the harm in casino gambling as recreation and I sure don't want to tell anyone else how to spend their money.
I don't want to see Florida turn into Atlantic City. In my view the Tribes are doing a good job and should be left as is. The only problem we have is there is only one casino in Central Florida at Tampa. There are a couple of offshore gambling boats on the east coast, but the odds are terrible. We could use another in Daytona or nearby which would give us a choice of the two. Casinos need to make money. If you have too many of them, they all lose and so do we.

The only vote or poll that matters is when people vote on a proposition during election day. At least this is a significant topic for the people to vote on.
At least in my state,
The idea of allowing the tribes to run casinos and allowing expansion within their reservation in return for more revenue was favored.
The idea of allowing the tribes to run casinos outside of their reservation was shot down by the voters due to the fear of degeneration within big population areas.

It is unbelievable how much power Disney has in the city of Anaheim, where Disneyland is located (west coast). Since they are the city's largest employer and source of revenue, they pretty much dictate who the mayor of the city will be as well as the planning that goes along the area. They've built bigger conventions and all the hotels surrounding it.

In Texas we don't even get an option to have a vote because of the "People who believe in Individual Rights" and "State's Rights" are too far right. Gambling is the scourge of the poor and uneducated who can't be trusted to make the right decision for themselves. So the "State of Texas" has to protect them from themselves. So we all drive to Oklahoma or Louisiana or elsewhere to play. Lake Charles's three casinos 2 hours from Houston (Golden Nugget, Isle and L'Auberge take in over $2.5M/day on average with 70-74% coming from Texas according to some research we've seen. Oh yeah! and if you want to gamble go buy Texas Lottery Tickets, or go down the street to the 8liners in the strip shopping center, or if you want a high stakes poker games its no problem finding plenty of private ones in all of the major Texas cities.

Try living in parts of Texas where Exxon, Shell and Chevron have their largest refineries in 3 neighboring cities. Mayor, city council members, school boards, and several of our local State Reps all connected to the Oil/Gas companies.
