Destroyed in Tunica

Post by ko king »

I agreed to meet a buddy who was in town at Tunica to play a little vp, bad decision. I'm sure he was beat worse than me because he tried to tackle $5 denomination vp, I stuck to $1 and a little $2 DDB. Neither of us could hit squat but a few small quads. We started the first day at Gold Strike where nothing was happening but bad buttons and cold machines. I had high hopes as the first machine I played threw a quad at me but the rest of the day was cold as ice. They had quite a few vp players there but I never witnessed anyone having a nice hit. I lost a big chunk there before I couldn't stand losing anymore. The next day we decided to try Hollywood Casino thinking it had to be better, turns out it was even worse that Gold Strike. I kept expecting luck to change for one of us but both of us ended up the same, no decent hits and a few thousand down. As we were coming up on the bridge I gave him a call and told him I was going to stop for a beer and watch a little football, he agreed it was a pretty good idea. After a couple of beers and a nice meal I said I was going to take $100 and play $2 denom DDB, he wanted no part of anymore vp but agreed to watch. Right off the bat I hit quad Kings and a few hands later I held 2 cards to the royal and out popped the other 3 magic cards for $8K. Once again the home of "Have You Had Your Royal Today" and " Friends Don't Let Friends Play In Tunica" pays off for me. Still up for the year, not by a lot but at least lucks been on my side for a change.

I like that story KO especially the ending...WTG.. I have never seen so many wild swings as the last few months playing at Mohegan Sun. In a cold cycle now. I can go as many as 6 or 7 hours without a single quad on draw poker. then get as many as 8 in one hour. Very strange, but that seems to be what they have done to the machines the last few years. I think the theory and it is a good one is to hope and wipe you out before the short hot cycle. If you stumble onto a hot cycle early, they hope you will and most do give it back by the end of the session.

Congrats on the royal ko, it really saved your bacon. I know you've tried to dissuade me from playing in Tunica and one of these days when I head down I'm going to find that "Home of the Royal" that you speak so highly of.

Never been to Tunica.  Sounds like we made the right decision.  The 3% Mississippi State tax is enough to keep me away.   You work all that time to finally hit something decent and they take it right off the top. It's always good to win at the end of a trip.   Like being chased by a tiger and getting away.

Here's what kills me about Tunica. Now I've been a vp player in Tunica since day one so we're talking about a 25 year time span. The game has changed without question in my opinion. Now there was always cold streaks and hot streaks but they seem very different now days. I never used to even give a seconds thought about hitting a cold streak because I knew the good hot streak was just around the corner. There were days I couldn't hit a single quad, they were few and far between but it did happen on occasion. The pay tables in Tunica haven't changed a bit in most casinos, some did drop their pay tables but they seem to be the casinos where you are more likely to find a hot streak. Back in the old days I had so many trips when I walked out with multiple W2-g's, hitting 3 in a day was very common for me, the most I ever had in 1 trip was 7. Now you are very lucky to get 1 W2-g and I don't care how many hours you spend playing. What I have discovered though is if I play at a casino with lower pay tables I get more quality hands, pretty much like it used to be. The casinos with lower pay tables seem to offer the opportunity of hitting a real hot streak, I can still have days where I get multiple W2-g's. There's one casino I spent a lot of time playing at just because they have some of the best pay tables for TDB in the area, I played over 60K hands of $1 denomination always at max played I never hit a single royal or aces w/k, not one. I caught more than my share of small quads but only hit 4 hand pays during that span of play for $2K each. This is one casino I question the games because the numbers just don't make sense.

No, no, I'm not trying to dissuade you or anyone else from playing anywhere you wish. A guy as lucky as you might clean up in Tunica and you also like to play games I never even try. In fact I wish more people would start playing in Tunica because I firmly believe that's where the problem begins and ends at. When the casinos were packed with players I just did better, the playing got tough when so many people quit playing. I know this shouldn't have any effect on my results but it's the only reasonable thing I can point to. There's just not much money walking in the doors these days, the casinos have plenty of .05 vp players and penny players but very few people willing to risk playing at higher denominations. I can see it with my own eyes, there may be 10 or so people playing vp but I'm the only one playing at the $1 denom, everyone else is playing .05. I urge you to come to Tunica, in fact I would like to meet you sometime and but you a beer or something.

Ted might just take you up on that though Ted will may order an Arizona Green Tea with honey and ginseng. I am actually having some now. It is great cold or hot. I'll take the beer KO if I ever get out that way.
