I have no idea what DaBurglar even means by 'personal observation and/or intuition'. Those things should never come into play when playing VP optimally.

Is he saying that normally he plays by the book, but that if he were hitting quads a lot on a certain day, that he would keep a small pair over a 4-flush? I'm confused.

That sounds almost exactly like "I follow the math - except when I don't" to me.[/QUOTE]Well it's not, but you're welcome to retain that conclusion no matter how you derived it.....it might help you to realize that since I was originally responding to Billyryan's generalization, in which he left it open to include (or not) far more than just Video Poker in it's application.1)  I clearly state I adhere to "math" (in Vp and in everything else appropriate).....of course, doesn't everyone whether they realize it or not?   Much of the time people have no choice.....2)  I clearly state I believe in the power of Personal Observation (i.e. paying attention).....again, another NON controversial principle that has its place in Video Poker.  Failure to be observant can lead to many problems and lost opportunities.3)  I clearly state (without getting specific) there are times when a person may go with their gut or "intuition".....this does not mean abandoning or forgoing math, nor it is exclusive of it......I am not saying (nor did I ever say or imply) that this means doing something like tossing a flush draw to go for a quad, although I would wager there ARE people here who would do that from time to time.    What I had more in mind is "going with one's gut on selecting one machine or game over another, with or without there being some clear advantage"....or choosing to play at one casino over another, again with or without a clear advantage or reason to do so.     MANY people on this forum have posted exactly this type of "gut level" decision making:  You'll find posts made by people who say "I just felt the urge to play at <insert casino name>",  or I felt "<such and such> machine calling my name, even though the paytable is only a crappy 96%"  etc.If you want to stay with your strict, minimalist interpretation of what I said in reponse to a wide open generalization by another poster, go right ahead....
