Dougie J came by every month or so. I wonder if it coincides with a particular phase of the moon.

Action movies are often overlooked at the Oscars.jetermacaw wrote: ↑Sat May 25, 2019 7:52 amIn 1993 an injustice was done. Val Kilmer was overlooked by the Academy for his role as Doc Holliday, in Tombstone. Val didn't even receive a nomination.
Tombstone was much more than a shoot 'em up western. If you saw through the action, it had numerous side plots that made the movie more authentic than most. Many of you would enjoy the movie. Lots of gambling. Doc lived part of his life in Leadville Colorado. He moved there because they told him the high altitude was better for his tuberculosis. We drove there once and could hardly walk around due to the thin air. Not a great place if you can't breathe.
Doc's girlfriend and common law wife, Big Nose Kate, was a part time prostitute. Very common profession in those days. If you want to read a great book about the "Soiled Doves" of the old west, read "My Life as a Whore" by Laura Evens. It talks about Black Hawk, Central City, Denver, Cripple Creek and what it was like back then. Many of those old mining towns are now full of casinos.

From a professional point of view, FLPhil, all of the studies regarding altitude's effect on existing tuberculosis are inconclusive. However, there is *some* accepted data indicating that long-term high altitude residents are less likely to contract tuberculosis in the first place. It's really gratifying to look back at some of the totally standard medical practices and beliefs of only 100 years ago and compare them with the vast body of knowledge that exists today and which has reduced or virtually eliminated once-widespread diseases. TB is a horrible, miserable way to die and thankfully its incidence has been greatly reduced. But still, more conclusive research is needed.

There are several bed and breakfast resorts in Bisbee that formerly were sanitariums for TB patients. Very luxurious. I imagine they were private resorts for rich invalids.
The real estate person told me many people with COPD retire to the area because of the climate.

I don't understand this post. I did, admittedly, make an off topic post in an apparently vain attempt to poke fun at another off topic post. But only mine was singled out for criticism. Does that mean it's OK to make off topic posts as long as you're not a "math supportive" player?

If you have never been to Cripple Creek, Black Hawk or Central City, it's quite an experience. They are all old former mining towns that currently have casinos. They look very similar to the Tombstone in the movie. Cripple Creek is outside of Colorado Springs. The two lane road up to the town twists and turns around the mountain. The first time we drove up the bends in the road were icy. Very scary to someone from Florida driving a rear wheel drive Lincoln. The Midnight Rose casino has 98.9% deuces wild in quarters. Bronco Billy's had triple play NSU deuces the last time we were there. There are at least a dozen more small casinos there. The elevation in Cripple Creek is 9,400 feet. I would never be able to stay there overnight.
Black Hawk and Central City are about an hour west of the Denver airport near Golden. They are both about 8,500 ft. We stay at the Ameristar. We both enjoy the hotel, but I have trouble sleeping because of the altitude. There are dozens of small casinos in the area. We love playing video poker in the Rockies. All casinos in Colorado are non smoking. The three hour drive on Highway 67 from Black Hawk to Cripple Creek takes you along a line of spectacular 14,000 foot snow covered mountain peaks. It doesn't get much prettier. We are going back this summer.
Sorry for going off topic again. Please feel free to continue squabbling about math.

you are an admittedly 'math supportive' poster who has disparaged non math based posts. yet, when given an opportunity to take a position on a math based thread, you choose to make your 'one and only' post in a 'vain' attempt to disparage another post.onemoretry wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 1:29 pmI don't understand this post. others took a position; some endorsed the math, others were inclined to suggest luck can override the math. NO ONE was criticized for their beliefs.
your lone offering was instead a sarcastic remark. bravo!

This thread started on May 13. I have been "on the road" since May 8, and returned home just yesterday. If I decide to participate in a discussion on this forum, I like to formulate my thoughts thoroughly, and then present them in well constructed grammatically correct English. I have chosen not to contribute to this topic to date because I didn't want to take the time away from my chief trip activity (playing video poker).
I have been reading the posts, though, and did throw in that off topic comment in response to what I thought was a completely unnecessary one.
