Great article. Hard copy sitting at home. Who knows when I would have read it otherwise. Too busy losing in AC today.

For some reason I find myself caring enough about my country to want to prevent its government being handed to a narcissistic buffoon with authoritarian tendencies. If you asked me why I honestly couldn't say. But I can't shake the feeling that mine is a decidedly rear-guard action, and that any nation that nominates such an one for the highest elective office in the power of its people to bestow, or one for which the likelihood that the jumped-up Arkansawyers in the Clinton mob will return to the Executive Mansion like a second coming of Snopses to Yoknapatawpha County is the good news, is a nation that will not be enjoying a position of power and influence in the world for very much longer. I'd certainly prefer to give European-style social democracy a try but there's no prospect of that in sight.

In 1998/99 I was helping promote a Latin Night at the Casbah club at the Taj. I got pretty friendly with one of the suits there, some sort of VP of something to do with finance. One day, I mentioned to him in public that I had recently bought stock in Trump Casinos. He smiled and told me I made a great choice.
About an hour later, I'm passing him in the backend of the house and he pulls me aside. Sell, he says. Sell tomorrow, and I never said that.
I sold and within a year the stock was selling for 20% of what I paid.

don't think you are the only one who cares about America. I am no fan of trump, stated this on the forum a number of times and called him a blowhard. voting this November will require a lot of folks to decide who will not be the worst of the two choices available. but, socialism is not the answer. according to the TREASURY DEPT, the federal government already spends 22% of total GDP the country produces each year. this does not count state and local spending, how much more do we need government to spend?

and, what makes you think Europe is such a great place. most of southern Europe is a financial disaster, the Brits are considering leaving the union and they are being overwhelmed by millions of immigrants.

be careful what you wish for.

how about Canadian style then? the only western economy that didn't have to bail out its financial sector. and now that Tim Horton's is coming to the North Star State it should be that much easier to petition our northern neighbors to make us a province...

we already have "socialism", you just never hear it honestly discussed or defined....seriously, we do.The truth is our current form(s) of government are vastly different than what our original founders envisioned or wanted, but of course, the WORLD we live in and technology and many other things are vastly different than they were in 1783-87 so who knows.....I have known about the TRUMP Bullsh*t (in AC, Manhattan & elsewhere) since the early 90s when he essentially imploded and should have been permanently wiped off the map except for some SHEER favors and good will shown him by various banks and regulators. The man is without doubt (or exaggeration) an IDIOT, INEPT, a Narcissitic "blowhard', and if elected, will bring about the destruction of the world (not the country, the WORLD).....he will blunder and bluster his way into a global catastrophe where all the nuclear weapons that everyone forgot still exist from the cold war somehow will end up getting used......I am not kidding, I can see it happening.

other than our mutual dislike for both potus candidates, we likely do not agree on much. but, unlike much of America, that should not prevent folks from trying to understand a different point of view.

let me ask these questions, can you point out a single case where someone was forced to borrow money to live in a house they could not afford, to borrow money to put in that fancy pool, go on that great vacation, send their kid to an overpriced school? why was the national savings rate only 1% in 2006, when people were making increasing incomes? why has there been zero media coverage of those who mismanaged their money and overspent and over borrowed?

fiscal conservatives were not in favor of a bailout, let the companies go under, but I understand why it happened. and, in fact, ALL TARP monies were repaid with interest, except those lent to GM (government motors), which was done as an appeasement to the unions. the taxpayers lost on that deal.

I am no expert on Canada, but it is a vast country, with an abundance of natural resources and a much smaller population. they get their oil from tar sands, among the dirtiest forms of oil available.

what is it you folks want? put bankers in jail, fine with me if they broke the law. how about putting barney frank in jail for directing FANNIE MAE to give loans to those who could not afford them and telling the country that fannie and Freddie were solvent?

I/m/o, there is not really much of a difference between those who favor Bernie and those who favor Trump. both sides are mad and want to blame someone for their troubles. they just do not agree on who to blame.
