Over the Edge, Part II - On Taco Tuesday, Everyone's a Winner!

What is a winner? It sounds like an obvious question when it comes to gambling. When you walk out ahead, you are a winner, right? Most players understand this to be true. You win some, you lose some. But for some people, there is an obsession with only counting someone a "winner" if they play and manage to attain a state of long-term winningness. I don't see it that way.

In fact, this mindset only makes sense to me if you are a professional gambler and view video poker as part of your career. If you are playing video poker for an average hourly wage, investing your time in something that you count on to continue winning at, then sure- You'd better make sure you are going to come out ahead in the long run. But I don't think that applies to most people who walk into a casino. They want to go home a winner TODAY.

If there is anything you should get used to in gambling, it's NOT being a winner. If you EXPECT to win on any given day, you are in for some real disappointment. Life is full of disappointments. I've now managed to turn that disappointment on it's edge. Because life is also full of opportunities. And so is your bankroll.

Welcome to Taco Tuesday.

It’s simple, really. Most of us have money that we set aside for different things. If you visit a casino regularly, then hopefully you’ve also set money aside for gambling and never play with money you actually need. A gambling budget is important and you should make sure you don’t exceed it. On Taco Tuesday, all you need for a “free” reward at the end of the day is to take $20 that you previously set aside for gambling, and set it aside for some kick ass tacos instead.

On most gambling days that $20 would end up in the casino's pocket, not yours. That's just a fact. Yes, it might have been the final $20 that you hit a jackpot on, but most times that won't be the case. So on Tuesdays, that $20 could be set aside to end the day with tacos. If you are disciplined with your bankroll, then these tacos are basically a free reward! You still have a shot at winning with the rest of your budget, but you’re keeping $20 out as a reward whether you win or lose.

I think Taco Tuesday would be a great casino promotion to captivate small time players and reward them with a low cost high value item just for participating. But since none of the casinos I play at are ingenious enough to offer this promo, I’ve simply created it myself, at their expense. And no matter what, I can leave knowing I didn't lose everything... At the very least, I "won" a belly full of tacos.

I know, I know… why not set aside ALL of your money for tacos instead of planning to lose it at the casino? Well, maybe because I find it entertaining to play, and I want a shot at winning something sometimes. If you don’t like this plan, you may be smarter than me. But on Taco Tuesday, I guarantee I’ll be happier. 8-)

I think the Kartrashians are hard at work right now trying to figure out how to copyright "Casino Taco Tuesdays."

Eduardo, you and I think pretty much alike Then again, we are recreational players who set aside discretionary funds for entertainment including VP. That's why a night out playing VP is about spending money playing VP as opposed to losing money. Breaking even or winning constitutes having a cost free night or even better being pad to have a nice time (for me with my wife). When I voiced this philosophy of looking at each individual trip to a local casino or a multiday trip to Vegas, I got chastised to say the least by APs and pros. Same with viewing one or more sessions in terms of time rather than hands played. I have no clue how many hands I have played anytime, let alone over the years my wife and I went to a casino, Vegas, etc. We were there for fun, not on a statistical gathering mission. As an aside, when Olds wondered in another topic why the number of posters and posts have diminished, I believe it is because the APs and pros can't tolerate a different perspective on what constitute a successful VP session, sessions or lifetime and folks shy away from being dissed, etc by the "VP correct" crew.

BTW, we are fish taco folks and always happy when we find a great place for them.

One final thought, as Jamie Colby ended each episode of "Strange Inheritance", "But just remember, "You Can't Take It With You."

It really depends type of gaming house you gamble at. Las vegas has FPDW my gaming house has a strong return on any lossee. And i think resorts in ac does to. Just today i picked up a gaming book from 1978 and it states females dominate the slots it also says gambling lossing can be worst than smoking. Gambling video poker is a funny bird. Turning 1$ into 7.50 has happened but is the frequency there? Thats where comps come in comps to me is like a 2nd chance at life if they give you the free play. My last gaming session had no opportunity to cash out a winner but they are giving back via comp which works for me. And i play enough to get a free dinner only takes a few hours

Smoking or VP is interesting. Non smoker. But I’d rather smoke for six months and be -$200 on cigarettes than -$3,500 on VP.

Only smoking 2 cigarettes a day? That's not much of an addiction...
