This is one of the few countries in the world where an adding machine mechanic can become a millionaire without inheriting money, being the relative of an insider or by operating an illegal enterprise. I am sure many of the members of this forum can relate similar experiences.
My step father worked for Sears Roebuck his whole life. He passed when I was a young man. Before he did, he told me not to be afraid of taking risks. He told me not to let my life be controlled by the lure of a steady paycheck. I took his advice and left a steady pay check to go out on my own. It wasn't easy. The government didn't help me. My family had no money. All I had was some brains and the ability to see opportunity and the tenaciousness to succeed.
I enjoy speaking with bright young people. As a member of the Miami Chamber of Commerce, I was invited to speak at a number of schools. I told the kids they don't need a "job" to succeed. What they need is an "opportunity". You would be surprised how many teachers came to me after my talk and wanted to know more of what I had to say. Hopefully, I inspired a few.
America works because no one tells you that you can't do something. No one is going to hand you money or the keys to the car either. It's all up to you. Capitalism is the only way a system like that can work. Sorry for the speech, but it's something I am passionate about.
what will happen after...

Yeah, it was take out only. Which made the guy entering, sneaking up behind me and slipping into the bathroom the woman unlocked even more jarring. They are some kind of hard core survivalists.

Doris, you and i are in the same group. You of course are using the greatest possible care when the need to go out arises. I do the same. Not as effectively as you,i missed the door handle part,it is on my list now, thank you.doris13 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 6:12 pmtech58,as a senior in nj let me tell you that we,like any other age group, need to go the supermarkets, pet stores, banks etc.i am in high risk group and i don't have a death wish.i go get what i need, come home, wash my hands and disinfect all surfaces i touched, even my car door handle.
When i read FAA"s post i interpreted the "out and about" part a little too loosely. Thanks for the call-out.
BTW i have a bottle of hand san. in my car and use it before touching anything. My coat, hat, and shoes, stay in the garage. Not sure if it helps but who knows. Again, thanks for the tip. Any more?

I forgot to mention that another element necessary in a workman's comp action would be causation in the workplace.Tedlark wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 5:01 pmPhil - Workman's comp payouts are governed by state law and would be determined on the nature and extent of the injury. We are talking about possible COVID-19 exposure here and not banana peels.FloridaPhil wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 2:31 pmTed, in Florida everyone sues even if there is no basis or remedy. This is due to the fact that we have more than 78,000 lawyers in Florida. Many of them are from your part of the country. They will take most any case without retainer hoping the defendant will settle before the case is tried. They tell me $10,000 is the standard "go away" value of a banana peel slip these days. If you do business in this State, you know this all too well.
I am proud of the fact that in 40 years of doing business in Florida, none of my businesses have ever been sued. When you consider I was on the cutting edge of the computer industry, this is something to be proud of.
I feel sorry for the Hard Rock employees. The Tampa casino is less than 30 minutes from the Orlando theme parks. The parks are closed, which means anyone here on vacation will be looking for something to do. When you serve a drink to a patron, they could have just driven from NY where they are under a State of emergency due to the virus. These employees are being put in danger by the greed of the tribes.

tech58,what really angers me is the fact that these young healthy people in my area know just what time the delivery trucks come in to the supermarkets, around 2am here,so at 3am they get up,go to the store and clean them out of all paper products.
i don't have hand sanitizer in the car but i always have 1 in my pocketbook.if i come across any more tips i'll let you know.

i think all the safe hygiene tips are great. saw a story, where a guy appearing to be in his forties got the virus. he claims to be an avid bowler, met up with his buddy at the bowling alley, shook hands, and after got sick. claims that single handshake was the cause.

The major grocery store chain in our area is Publix. Publix is a Florida based privately owned company. Our local store is opening on Tuesday from 7 AM until 8 AM, just for seniors. I am not sure how they will police their customers, but I am sure they will not allow anyone to abuse it. They have also been closing an hour earlier each day to restock the shelves.
We went to Lowes today to buy some mulch. The parking lot was completely full. People are staying home and many are working on their yards. In every situation like this, there will always be some winners. All the restaurants are closed except for pick up and drive thru. We are seeing some pretty creative offers. One upscale waterfront restaurant is offering cheap specials for pick up.
Our grandfathers won World War II. Americans will make it through this and come out better on the other end. I saw a bumper sticker today that made me laugh out loud. It said, "I survived Obama, you will survive Trump!"

LL, neither Notes or myself are suggesting that capitalism is "bad", many post's by both of us to backup exactly the opposite.Lucky Larry wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:46 pmSo what type of system are you suggesting we (America) go to since you are suggesting "capitalism-making a buck" is bad?notes1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 2:20 pmtech, hope you are right. but, globalists and those only interested in making a buck, see those 1+billion potential customers and are too eager to accept the rules the chinese have mandated.
the best hope is if the cost of dealing with them outweighs any profit.
What about the companies' obligation to their shareholders - you know those who own a piece of the company through the stock market? or company share?
Where should I invest my 401K if companies are not out to make a profit? Just asking for a friend? Me and millions of Americans.
But a read of the Constitution, the Federalist papers, and supporting documents for Laws to regulate the economy, reveals that capitalism has never been viewed as a perfect system.
When the "warts" on the system, mostly driven by a combination of the profit motive and greed, threaten to derail the economic engine they rely on, what should we do?
The profit motive is GOOD, a bit of greed is not BAD either, but neither should supersede National interest.
When the "INVISIBLE HAND"(A.Smith i think) goes after every ones wallet, and the economic engine that has produced the greatest country the world has ever known,is threatened by reliance on people who are not our friend, what do you propose we do LL ?

Young people are "INDESTRUCTABLE" just ask them. They can become carriers without any symptoms
themselves.
Maybe TRUMP's using a National Disaster declaration this very minute, can be used to reign them in.

Congrats. on the walking and the pace.olds442jetaway wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 5:44 pmFAA.... I’m walking 3-4 miles a day at just under a run. Problem is the beach and boardwalk I usually have to myself is now crowded with moms, kids out of school, dogs, people I’ve never seen before that are speaking languages I never heard of etc. Nearly impossible to keep 6 feet away especially at the pace I walk. Now I have to find another place to walk. Could hit the woods, but tick season started already.
I know what that means even for a young fellow like you, (only 77 i believe,or am i confused again?).
I have been a runner for 52 years, but have been re-habing a hamstring problem for 3 months,am heading back to 3-4 miles at 5.5-6 mph, but the old running gear(at 79) does no take to forced recovery like it used to.
