I guess I haven't kept up with the times, as I was shocked at today's cost of "dining out".

All of the casino meals on our recent trip were comped, in one way or another. But, in transit, of course, we were on our own.

On the way home Sunday, we had close to a four hour layover at Chicago's Midway airport, and "dined" at Reilly's Daughter Irish Pub. Two cheeseburgers, one beer, and one soft drink came to $62.42. Add a $10 tip, and convert to Canadian dollars, and the total was a touch over $100! To say I am surprised is an understatement.

OMT, I live about 20 minutes south of Midway Airport and dinner would have been my treat. I know lots of great places that I could have taken you to. Reilly's Daughter started out as a bar in my neighborhood, spent many a fuzzy night there.

Maybe next time.

For the trip, we were down a combined $5300, or so. Sound better if I phrase it as "only" 1.5% of our coin in?

Absolutely! What a relief to learn. At least it wasn't heedlessly frittered away. Quality time on machine.

If I've read correctly, it's very expensive to operate an airport restaurant. Rent is high, and the airport may also take a percentage of sales. Everything has to go through security, complicating deliveries and logistics. Same for workers, who usually must pay to park.

Casinos also have somewhat of a rep for high prices, although that varies a lot. In downtown Reno, Club Cal Neva has reasonable prices in its restaurant. A double cheeseburger is $12.

Row pricing is $19 for a dc at Brew Brothers Eldorado. But locals get 20% off throughout the property (casino-owned restaurants) if they pay rather than using a comp.

Peppermill Reno is $21 for a dc in its cafe, but again locals get 20% off including point redemptions. They like to screw the visitors.

Cheapest I've seen lately for adequate quality food is Rainbow Club in the Vegas area. $9.50 for a dc at Triple B Grill.

How hefty are the McDonalds patties? Bing says 1.6 oz each for a total of 3.2. Is that possible? I think I could read my newspaper through one of those :geek: .

I worked at McDonalds 1964-1966. 1.6 ounces is correct. Back then everything was made fresh. Making the fries was an incredibly complicated process starting with peeling a 50 pound sack of potatoes in an old wringer washing machine lined with sandpaper like material and they came out a shoot at the bottom. they were rinsed several times, then blanched, hung up to dry and drain, then flash fried at about 360° with lard. The burgers were always made fresh and the fish fillet buns were excellent because they were steamed and serve piping hot totally different than today.

We have another trip, hopefully with a better financial outcome, planned for early January.
Our departure date for that trip is fast approaching. We plan an overnight stay at Seneca Niagara on January 9, with a flight to Vegas from Buffalo the following day.

We then begin our two week Nevada adventure with two nights on the Strip at the Cromwell (we need a Las Vegas Caesar's property stay to justify using their $600 air fare reward), before moving downtown for two nights at Circa. I'm not really sure why we decided to spend two nights at Circa, other than it's a very nice facility, and we have room offers there.

Then, it's off to Laughlin for four nights at the Tropicana. We have played there before (after it became a Caesar's property), but never stayed there. Hopefully, the machines we like to play there will still be available.

And then, it will be back to Vegas for six nights at the Four Queens before flying back to Buffalo on January 24. Our plan is to then stay At Seneca Niagara for two nights, before finally completing the trip home on the 26th.
