Kudos to New2vp

Post by billryan »

I don't know if everyone here reads Gambling with an Edge, but in response to a Bob Dancer column, our very own new2vp had a very subtle, but spot on observation.
He's the real deal, if there was any doubt before this.

New is probably one of the most advanced students of video poker math,if not at the top of that heap, that participates on this web site. This by no means is a rip to some of the other familiar names such as: alpax, Vman, OMT,even billryan. I apologize if I missed someone but I've been fighting a cold.

Thanks Bill and Ted for your nice comments.  I wish I could fit in a reference to an Excellent Adventure.  I did used to post here quite a bit, but I went back to a 9-5(ish) job, which considerably cut into my VP hobby, about 5 years ago.The comment that I appended to Mr. Dancer's column was due to some time that I spent here when Dream Card first came out.  I don't know if the casino machines ever had troubles selecting the best card to maximize EV, but it took a while at this website for the game's dream card selection to be perfected.  I helped a bit pointing out some of the discrepancies.  I don't play the game much except in contests (and then only the Triple Double Bonus version) but I haven't noticed any errors here in many years.By the way, Bill.  In your few posts here, I would certainly have thought that you have been playing for quite a while.  You must be a quick study if you are a beginner. And Ted, I did want to compliment you for your attempts at getting the last "Word."

New I seem to remember changing the Dream Card when playing in casinos to better suit EV when the game first came out. I too, usually only play TDB and Deuces Wild but when playing in Las Vegas I will play DDB because I haven't found the game out there in TDB.

As for the last "Word" I thought it was quite funny and I was surprised that the gag went on for as long as it did. Why is it that I get along with 383,000 (give or take a few hundred) members here and only 1 that I don't? Can you run some numbers on that and get back to me?

Again; I respect and appreciate your input here and the good old days are mere memories.

I follow Mr. Dancer's column at Gambling With An Edge on a regular basis, and I too was also impressed with the comment that New brought up with the Dreamcard situation. However, even before that I had already viewed New with such high regard, wish this site had 2 more clones of New.

New is probably one of the most advanced students of video poker math,if not at the top of that heap, that participates on this web site. This by no means is a rip to some of the other familiar names such as: alpax, Vman, OMT,even billryan. I apologize if I missed someone but I've been fighting a cold.

I agree with that assessment as well. New has another sense of analytical skills that I personally may not have, and is able to express and explain things well on top of it.

A beginner can gain so much by reading the past posts dated earlier this decade when OMT, Vman, New and shadowman were more involved. The last three years prior to this year had so much good information when Mr. Dancer was participating on this site.

It just so happened that New pursued other ventures right around the time when the quality of video poker games went into a sharp decline.

These days a much bigger bankroll accumulation is needed to succeed in video poker, with the costs of living rising, I find myself studying more rather than actually playing; I am one of the rare ones who find it a rewarding experience rather than a chore.

Although it is very important to know the strategy of a video poker game variant cold prior to playing, it is not the only thing to be successful. There are many other things that are possible to study in order to gain knowledge/skill to be an overall better player.

Many people are fighting illness at this time of year, I hope you can feel better soon Ted.

I always found New2vp's name to be humorous. Maybe he was new when he made the screen name up, but when I first started reading the forum, I knew he knew math details inside and out.

I have also dealt with a "Dream Card" bug at Red Rock before. I correctly changed the card before playing the hand. The game was Bonus Poker, hard to see that in the pic.

I have also heard on another forum if you get 222 + royal card in deuces, it will give you a wild royal with a Dream Card and not 4 deuces! Gotta watch for that!

As far as being new goes, I was a BJ player since the late 90s and tried to learn VP in the 2004-2006 period.   Lost a bit, hit five of a kind on a 50 cent machine while drunk and quit while I was ahead.
Last January, knowing I'd be moving here, and since I was staying at the South Point, I attended my first Bob Dancer class. Two things happened that day.
My room was robbed while I was at class and someone charged several hundred dollars to my card in Vegas, and attempted to do the same in LA but my bank shut it down.
That was bad. Good news is I walked into the Hideout in Laughlin( or is it The Hideaway, I never get it right)and my very first hand I got an KQJT, and low card of Spades. I always thought you never throw away a winning hand greater than a pair but remembering the days lesson, I tossed the low card, and got the Ace for a $1199 payout. A couple days later, back in Vegas I stopped by the LVA and bought a couple of Winners Guides, and Dancers software.
Remembering the best way to Carnegie Hall, I practiced a whole lot until I moved here a few months later.

Whenever I hear about Bob Dancer's classes on "How To Win At Video Poker" sponsored by Southpoint Casino, I am reminded of a class that was sponsored by the New York Public Library entitled "How To Steal Library Books."
