Going to the Marine Corps Ball celebrating the USMC birthday hosted by the Marine Security Guards at the US embassy was one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable activities while living overseas. Happy Birthday Marines.

The Air Force falcon injured in a service academy prank gone awry is showing improvement after fears the 22-year-old bird might have to be euthanized.
A note of levity on our other branches. Oh, those bungling Army burglars! Any comment, Jetermacaw?

My father's newly found unit was broken up and he thought he would be let go, but the Marines kept him another 18 months. I know he got his second Purple Heart that winter and I know his unit fought near the Frozen Chosin in the Freezin Season but know nothing of his personal involvement.

As a relative you might want to go here and request his records:
https://www.archives.gov/personnel-reco ... -personnel

It should give you info for both his time in the Army and Marine Corps.

You might also find online information through the Daily Reports and Mission Recaps of the Marine Corps during his time in Korea. It takes some digging but for me it was worthwhile, in that I was able to see what I actually did on two certain occasions. After 50 years the memory fades, a lot.

Dugout Doug My Ass!!!

MEDAL OF HONOR CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur (ASN: 0-57), United States Army, for conspicuous leadership in preparing the Philippine Islands to resist conquest, for gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against invading Japanese forces, and for the heroic conduct of defensive and offensive operations on the Bataan Peninsula. General MacArthur mobilized, trained, and led an army which has received world acclaim for its gallant defense against a tremendous superiority of enemy forces in men and arms. His utter disregard of personal danger under heavy fire and aerial bombardment, his calm judgment in each crisis, inspired his troops, galvanized the spirit of resistance of the Filipino people, and confirmed the faith of the American people in their Armed Forces.

Mac was Commander in the Pacfic. The Island hopping strategy was his. Of course he didn't come up with it by himself.
Ike didn't singlehandedly come up with the Normandy plans by himself, and George Washington didn't cross the Delaware by his lonesome. Rumours are Teddy Roosevelt didn't charge San Juan Hill fighting solo.

Those 300,000 Chinese volunteers that poured into Korea came across the bridges that Mac didn't blow. Truman had famously given him permission to destroy the southern ends of the bridges while instructing him to be sure the northern sides remained intact.
Wars can get messy. Sometimes people die and circumstances get out of control.
