I wish I could bring my buddy back. I would bring him to the casino and he would scare the machine into paying a jackpot. If that didn’t work, I feel sorry for the machine. As loveable as he was, he would sometimes carry around a brick from the yard. If I asked him to put it down or give it to me he would pulverise it into several small pieces. Another time, he stepped on a yellow jacket nest and evidently got stung on the pad of his foot. I know that hurt. Instead of running away yelping, he stood there catching and eating the yellow jackets one at a time as they came out of the ground. I fired my pickup truck up that he loved getting ready to take him to our vet or the pet ER. I know he ate over a dozen of them When I checked him over carefully including inside his mouth, I saw no after effects. He acted normally and just wanted to play. He went back to that spot for days though looking for more yellow jackets!

A veterinarian once told me dogs have a much higher tolerance for pain than humans. He said if your dog is crying in pain there is really something wrong.

if sometimes he leaps through
your dreams actual as in life,
eyes kindling, questing,
asking, laughing, begging,
it matters not at all where that
dog sleeps and at last....
But there is one best place to bury a dog.
One place that is best of all.
" If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call -
come to you over the grim, dim frontier
of death, and down the well-remembered
path, and to your side again.
" And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.
" People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.
" The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."

I had to put down my 80 lb. Yellow lab/golden retriever mix last November-on Veterans day. He was a great dog, very gentle with everyone. I live in a small town and everyone in town knew Bailey and stopped to say hello when we were out for a walk. He made it to 13 yrs and 8 months. Not bad for a dog his size.

My Doodle turns 11 on St Patrick's Day. He's lost a step or two but still enjoys tussling with younger dogs. He goes head to head with a Mastif- Great Dane mix that outweighs him by forty pounds sometimes twice a day and holds his own. He was a reading dog for a few years in NY but I didn't want to put him through the applications out here.
