I love poker and I do tend to waste some of my money on slot machines so I was thinking to switching my time into video poker rather than slot machines to actually give myself some kind of small chance at winning something or at least breaking closer to even since I heard they offer way better odds.
But where to get started. I've read up on the basics.. basic strat. Maybe Deuces Wild or Bonus bonus seem like the best full pay games etc. Always play five coins and so on. After all that my 5 questions that remain are the following:
1. I live in QLD, Australia is there such a database of locations of physical VP machines that exists or a community so I can figure out where the best game machines are? If there is I can't find any but worth an ask.
2. Are the machines in online gambling casinos fair generally and the payables honest? Are they just as good as playing on a live machine?
3. Is there software that exists where I can practice my strategy? (Maybe something that tells me when I make a mistake?) If so where can I find this?
4. How long a session in a day is best to play on a machine and with how much money? Or at least what are the general habits of most players who are playing and giving themselves a decent chance to win? Do people employ a martingale type approach to bets or other bet sizing strategy or is that a waste of time or even disadvantageous? (I just flat bet 0.25 at 5 coins)
5. In double double poker should I always try to double my winnings when I win my wager back on say one pair? And should I keep it for anything higher or should I just never try to double? Unsure what the common strategy is there.
If you can answer all or indeed any of these questions I'll be very grateful. Cheers!
Dan

Discussion of online gambling is not permitted however the rest of the questions are all good for a beginner to know. I don't think we have any members from Australia, but someone might have some insight.

Until you get software, use freeslots.com and select the video poker machine. Turn on trainer mode on the bottom left. Click on 2X to get the normal coin payout. You can change the pay table too by clicking on a number. A useful free web page. I own and like Video Poker for Winners computer software.

Australia does not have video poker as we know it.
So long as you live there, the only possible video poker is online --- which subject is forbidden here. I recommend you find a site where that can be discussed and post the same question there.

Back in the 80s, there used to be video poker in Australia, but it didn't catch on and they've pulled it completely.
My Australian friends have come over to Las Vegas and they LOVE IT and can't figure out why they don't have it there.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm sorry I didn't know we couldn't discuss online video poker.. I'll refrain in future. Just out of curiosity does anyone know why we can't discuss it? Seems like a strange rule is all.
Not sure why Australia doesn't seem to have physical VP machines anymore either. Very strange and annoying.
In regards to regular machine poker I do go to vegas this year so I'll keep an eye out when I visit. A question about that briefly.. If I'm playing top bet on a machine (to make sure I qualify for the big hands) I still get a choice how high I bet.. Curious as to what (if any) betting strategies people use. Is it okay to fluctuate between amounts during play in various ways or best to stick to flat betting whatever amount your bankroll can handle?
I think I've just got lucky but in the past but I've switched up the amounts in set cycles and sometimes I happened to hit the four deuces on loose deuces when on a high bet cycle to amazing payoff. Maybe not worth doing in the long run but I wondered how other people bet and what a typical bankroll people approach loose deuces or deuces wild machines with considering the pay tables are slanted to pay more toward the 4 deuces and natural royals.
Anyway thanks again for saying g'day and answering my questions

When it comes to betting, it is rather simple: Always play maximum coin in at a denomination you are comfortable with.

To answer your question: Is there software that exists where I can practice my strategy? (Maybe something that tells me when I make a mistake?) If so where can I find this?
As a VP Gold Member I have used the training mode games and learned a few tweaks to playing my hand.
