I've shared this before long ago but since it fits this post and question I shall add it again:
A few years ago after having a bad run of luck Ihad myself barred out of the casino. They call it "Self Exclusion". Basically you sign a contract stating you wish to get barred from gambling there for a year or whatever and they take your photo etc. Once you are barred if you are caught on the property you will be arrested for trespassing and they don't have to pay you if you hit a jackpot and can seize any credits or chips and tickets you have on you.
I was good for awhile but then started sneaking back in figuring they long ago forgot me. Anyway, since I was barred out and would be arrested if I was caught I would throw away any chances of hitting a royal flush or other taxable hand since that would result in being asked for ID etc.
So there I was one day minding my own business playing the old Double Double Bonus game at $5 a hand. I hit "Deal" and it just deals me a Royal Flush! The machine freezes up the screens saying, "Jackpot $4000! Call Attendant!" The light on top the machine is flashing and the bells ringing.
My reaction is, "DAMN IT!"

Seriously, the word surprise in your post is something all VP vets could write a book about.
A five-card-draw Royal would certainly be in my book but only tied for first with my most improbable Royal ever.
In 1997,my first year of VP,first VP in Vegas,Sam's Town Boulder, playing quarters, i held 2Q's, QS on left end and QH on right end. Hit draw with my eye on the QH and watched it disappear and be replaced by 10S. Dang malfunction!! Then my eye caught the credit meter and it's running! Maybe a straight right?
Checked and sure enough an A-high straight, ALL SPADES!
That's the easy part to explain. Now the hard part.
Very much a newbie at the time, first Royal, ecstatic, right?
No! My first thought was (hard to admit now) a quote from the tag on all machines,' MALFUNCTION VOIDS ALL PAYS AND PLAYS"!!!
I was sure the machine would lock, the crew would show up,and my $1000 would be reclaimed!
I recently had converted from Blackjack to VP and had zero experience on machines.I didn't know there were malfunctions and then MALFUNCTIONS. I looked around, nothing. Noticed the credits still at 4000 plus. Decided that maybe, just maybe, i was wrong. So i hit the deal button and sure enough it wasn't locked! So i jumped up,hit the cashout button, and got ready to run. Of course you VP vets know what happened next. NOTHING! For me at the time, back to the depths of despair. It's locked i am doomed!
Right?
Wrong!
Why? I challenge the crew to answer that question. First Correct answer wins all the draft craft beer they care to drink (Monday after 6:00 Soaring Eagle,[ $1.25 each after 6:00] ).
Will give answer, after suitable period, only if necessary.
The answer is.....my ignorance about VP machines continued. I tried to figure it out.The Royal was gone. A new hand was up. It must not be locked! Why won't it give me my money? I could not call for help they would find me out. I scanned the screen for help for awhile. Only then did i notice the light in the lower right-hand corner that said...DRAW...!!!
And now not only the VP vets, but most fresh newbies, see the reason for my 15 minutes of angst.
Ignorance was not bliss, but grabbing that first Royal ticket was close.

I've twice drawn Royals after discarding all five cards, but both were on 100 play and I didn't even notice them until the payouts kept rolling.

In 2007, I was dealt a 5c royal at the Palms in Las Vegas, the only dealt one among my 39 royals since beginning to play VP in 2004. It was the first hand of the game. I pushed the deal button and wasn't even looking at the screen but was instead looking down as I was adjusting my chair. I looked up and there it was and immediately cashed out for a great return on a 25c investment.
