Harrah's Cherokee

Post by slotpayer »

Harrah's Cherokee has a woderful bank of quad progressive DDB poker games on the 50 cents denon, $2.50 bet. It is a 9-6-4-3-1-1 game. It is always full.
Last week they put in a dollar game, $5.00 bet with a 6-5-4-3-1-1 pyatable. I asked the man that is the Director of Slots there why he put in so bad a paytable and he responded, no one will know the difference, we will just raise the hold.
I came back two Saturdays later and the $1 game bank was empty. I told him that in an email.

That casino has nother other casino within 300 miles and figures that there is no competition.

I hope the next United States administration makes video poker legal everywhere so we can get some real competition.

I think this approach is typical of Harrahs. They will milk as much as they can out of the players.

When I visited the casino many years ago I played the Shamrock Sevens. It appeared to be the best game availalbe.

Wherever Harrahs shows up, and more so recently, the greed factor escalates. Cherokee in its infancy was a good place to play, small selection of vp but good paytables, slot machine (Lock & Rolls) payback percentages where good for slots then a new Hotel  and other amenities happened. How much influence the Cherokee Band has over this , I am not sure of. But times have really changed.  Folks in Michigan can also, probably attest to the fact that as Harrahs got more control over Casino Windsor everything went South there.

The bad part is that Harrahs appears to be having a detrimental effect on the whole industry. Maybe there is something to becoming so big.

Quick story about Harrahs. The best casino in Tunica in my opinion was the Grand Casino and judging from the crowds of people there every night it was obvious that the Grand was the most popular. I am not exagerating when I say you saw jackpots on video poker machines and slots from one end of the casino to the other. They had a huge bank of slot machines set up in a square that included about 60 different $1 slots and you almost always had to wait and get a seat to play one. There were big hits there every night and I hit my share also. The video poker was great there also same situation as far as waiting to get a machine to play on though. Very rarely did I go to play video poker did I not see at least one royal flush hit. The $5 and above video poker and slots were located in a room all to themselves and on occasion I would go in there to play. Just like the rest of the casino it was packed also with W2-G's being filled out by several players. Then overnight things seemed to change all the video poker machines were replaced and different slots were going in all over the casino. I had no idea what was going on and just thought they were making some renovations. But without a doubt play went sour fast. The jackpots seemed to disapear overnight, along with that we were noticing far less people at the casino. I was slow to learn that the Grand was now owned by Harrahs Entertainment. I had no idea why it would make any difference but it was a completely different casino. But it has progressively gotten worse and fewer and fewer players are attending. The only advantage they have is that they are the first first casino you come to on the Memphis side. I can go in the place and there are no players at the video poker machines, but I can go down the road to Fitzgeralds or the Reasorts and see many people playing the video poker machines. I also run into all the the ex Grand Casino video poker players and all of them say the thing, "it sucks". Why chase off players? Makes no sense to me.

Most of us who have had experience in the Harrah's casinos in Kansas (not casinos in Kansas but PEOPLE in Kansas) are very concerned about the bidding going on for management of the new Kansas Casinos that will be opening probably in 2010 around the State.Harrah's along with the MGM group are bidding on a location in a little town called Mulvane just south of Wichita.  The Binion's group and Penn group are bidding on a location in Wellington which is just a little further south.Personally, I'm pulling for the Binion's group to win the bid for the casino in this part of the State! We thought that the Mulvane location had been NIXED by the State, but later reports indicate they are still in the running.  We do NOT want Harrah's to win the bid.  Or most of the knowledgeable casino patrons do not want them. The Pottawatomie Tribe's Prairie Band Casino up near Topeka was managed for years by Harrah's.  The Tribe (or Harrah's, not sure which) dropped that contract in July of 2007 and now the Tribe is managing it as far as I can tell.  The games haven't changed but the comps have reportedly gotten much better and it does seem that the floor people are more friendly.
